I was wondering if anyone suspects/ed a learning diability in their child then what steps did you take? I have really laid back with my 8 yr. old ds however spelling is a huge problem. Reading is slowly coming along but mainly through memorization would be my guess. Phonics is a no go for him. He hates to write but has been doing a little. He has started to really enjoy the Billy and Blaze books on his own so that is where he is for reading but I see where he reads words like "cloud" he says "could". He adds letters in that aren't there, and skips words. I am concerned that is more than he is a slow learner and needs more time. I am just not sure. I mean now he is almost 9. I can see my 6 year old gaining fast and seeing the "rules" of words he does not get. We do most of our work orally and I want him to enjoy reading which he is now which is the first time I can say that.
Any advice? Thanks.

Tracy,

In case you haven't seen it, look into the AKVO Spelling program (Sequential Spelling). A post from last week in this forum has a link to it, and the AKVO stands for "Audio, Kinesthetic (is that right?), Visual, Oral" I think.

See if that's something that might help your son. Also, Angie had a post about choral reading. I wonder if that is worth a try.

Has your dc been evaluated by a good vision specialist. Most of our dc have vision problems - with 20/20 acuity and although we had wandering eye with one and some severe problems not detected until about 9, all the problems were corrected with very hard work in about 1 years time. At 14, this dd does not have any residual problems. She did a lot of things like you were describing - writing 12 as 21 or reading it that way, missing little words, horrible writing and spelling and misreading similiarly spelled words like cloud and could. She could read what she wanted to read, (ie very, very interested in it - but didn't really pick up lots of books and then would seem to struggle with an easier book a day later. If you want more details, PM me and I'd be happy to share our venture.

It was a struggle for me to find the correct diagnosis - and initially I wasn't that interested in what I called "labels" until I realized that I needed to know what would help and what wouldn't and a real diagnosis as opposed to a catch all label would give me clues into how to teach and what curriculums would help her most. In the end, we found that she was dealing with a correctable deficiency in her visual system and correcting it made tons of difference for her in many ways!

Just one more thought. My son is an extremely auditory learner & struggled with reading & spelling. He does great with books on tape & anything that he's able to listen to.

I don't know how homeschoolers persue testing for this sort of thing, but my 10 yo nephew was recently diagnosed with (I can't remember the exact name) something that meant things can go in, be processed and remembered, but can not come out again. Reading out loud, writing, reciting times tables were all painful to him. By the time my sister decided it was a real problem (this past fall), he was about a grade level behind and spending tons of extra time in after school programs that were supposed to be helping him improve and weren't.

I mention it because before reading about Janet's children's vision issues, I had never heard of them(I did mention them to sis), and I had never heard of this before either. And without knowing, my sister didn't know how to help. Now they have a tailored program for him at the school.
