My beautiful 3, 2, and 1 year olds found a pen and marked up the couch A LOT! I am at a loss as to how to clean it. I thought I read that hairspray gets out ink. If it does, either I am using it wrong or I have the wrong kind of hairspray.

Any suggestions!?!?

Thanks,
Christine

what type of ink? and what type of fabric? the hairspray has denatured alcohol and that's why it can work on some pen marks.

You may need a white cloth to soak up the ink/hairspray as you apply it.

It's a regular black ink pen - ball point.
The fabric is a pale yellow (gift from my parents, not something I'd pick with little ones ) upholstery fabric.

I'll try blotting with a white cloth, I've been trying to blot with a towel and the stain is fading, but still oh-so-visible! There is SO MUCH INK! I think this could take all day or more blotting and spraying and blotting and spraying

Thanks!
Christine

just don't use vinegar.. vinegar is used to set dyes.

You might also try getting an upolstery cleaner (like rent a rug doctor with attachments) so that you can suck out the stuff perhaps better than just blotting will do.

and there's always the strategically draped throw blanket?

O Christine - ballpen is notoriously tough to get out. Have you tried rubbing alcohol? How about some club soda and blotting too? Just be careful to do a patch test on anything you try so that you do not discolor your couch. I will say a prayer for you.

Well, it's been awhile, but I wanted to post what worked in case anyone searches for this in the future

I was able to take the cushion covers off the cushions. A long (over an hour) soak in a concentrated Oxiclean / water solution (at least a heaping scoop per gallon) did the trick. When I took the cushion covers out of the bucket, there were only a few remaining lines, which came out with a little rubbing. I used the concentrated solution on the parts of the couch that couldn't be soaked in a bucket, and with a little work, these stains came out too.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Now that the ink is gone and Christmas stockings are here (all of you moms can understand) I have a few candy cane and chocolate stains to get out of my nice clean couch . It's always something

God bless,
Christine

I cleaned the cover from the futon couch and both recliners in my living room before Christmas.. matter of fact I spent about a week before Christmas with sheets covering the recliners and threatening everyone to keep the clean at least until Christmas. I have to admit.. I haven't look real close since Christmas

I just saw my MIL get ball-point ink off an upholstered chair with "Greased Lightning" I was amazed.
