I have co-slept with all my children from the beginning. I am noticing a trend that makes me CRAZY (though, I love cosleeping overall), and that is my babies seem to get WORSE at sleeping once they hit a year. I've often thought it was developmental, teething, etc..., which maybe it is, but it seems that all that restless sleeping because they are crawling, walking, teething, etc... somehow translates into a baby who, every night, wants to nurse ALL NIGHT LONG!
I used to be able to get out of bed in the morning and leave the baby to sleep, but no more. I used to get a good 4-5 hour stretch at the beginning of the night, whether it be so I could stay up late and get stuff done or sleep for that stretch. But NO MORE.
I love my baby, but the sweet little guy by day turns into grouchy, ultra-demanding, I'm gonna scream if I'm not perpetually nursing by night. Its like Jekyl and Hyde, really. I can't say I'm at my sweetest when he wakes me up to nurse again, either.
Is this normal? Is there anything I can do about it? I have usually night-weaned about now because it starts to make me so crazy, but that sure is stressful, too. I'm not pregnant, and I think I probably just grin and bear it until I am and the nursing aversion makes it worse for me.

When they get busy during the day they may not be nursing as much during the day.. and then try to make up for it at night. Maybe if you could get him to nurse more/longer during the day the nights would ease up? and/or maybe he needs a bedtime snack other than just nursing. Being busy applies to all intake of food.. it slows you down, you know, so you eat some and get going again rather than eating enough

Dear Lindsay - one of mine was a good sleeper who changed at a year old. He is much better now. Two books that I found good (and neither of which advocate any kind of leaving your child to cry it out) were:
The No Cry Sleep Solution - Elizabeth Pantley
Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child - Marc Weissbluth

It's probably not a coincidence that I have weaned most of my babies around that point. It becomes a matter of sanity preservation.
You could try making sure that he nurses more during the day. Once they become more active it is tempting for us as well to lose track of how often and enjoy the freedom. Then we pay for it at bedtime.
