Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Can anyone suggest resources for a mathematically gifted 6yo boy?

He is halfway through MUS Gamma and it is way too easy for him conceptually, but MUS is too writing intensive for him to just zoom ahead. Being a 6yo boy, he doesn't much care for writing things out.

We use MEP, and I have found it to be a fabulous program for a variety of reasons. It is not like any US program; it is excellent for gaining a very good understanding of how numbers work.

As excellent as it is, you can get it all for free from this UK web site. This will at least allow you to give it a try without spending lots. I suggest people use it for a few weeks to really get a feel for how it works.

Year one starts off simplistically--far below where your son is, but it finishes off far ahead. One of the neat things about this program is that even though my 6 year old (on lesson 47) has only worked with numbers 1 through 5, he has been exposed to, on a very basic level, things like algebra, negative numbers, and word problems. Each year has 6 books; your son could probably start in book 3 or 4 of year 1.

Keep in mind that MEP years 1 through 6 is equivalent to US grades 1 through 8 math, so that gives you an idea of how well this program builds solid conceptual understanding. One example of how different this program is, Ds#1 finished MUS through Delta before we switched; he then had to start in MEP year 3. Not until the end of year 3--after covering all 4 functions, fractions, geometry, metric conversions, and a boat load of other concepts to put those functions to use--the program taught vertical 3 digit addition with regrouping. At that point the process is intuitive and simple for kids to do, whereas in the US programs teach this algorithm before kids really have an understanding of what is going on.

BTW, the password for some of the books is CIMT4maths (case sensitive.) If you like the program I suggest you join the MEP-Homeschoolers group.

Blessings,
Kris
