Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

For those who've read this book, I'm wondering if you can help me decide if it would make a good gift for a friend. I've not read it, and all I have to go on is the number of times it's been mentioned on these boards, and the reviews at Amazon.
I'm wondering, is it primarily a cook book, or is it more the story of how this family changed to a better way of eating?
My friend and her husband have both retired in the last couple of years and enjoy living off the land. They no longer have an electric stove, now they have a wood burning stove. (It's very cool...well, I mean hot ... but I think it looks neat in their antique farm kitchen.) Anyway, they've been gardening like crazy and what they don't grow themselves they buy from the local Amish folks or another near by farmer that they know.
This book came to mind as a gift for them, but I don't think they really need a cookbook. I just thought if it was more of a story they would enjoy it. (They are both avid readers.)
What do you think?

I have this cookbook and I LOVE it. It is my absolute favorite. It is published by Mennonites, but one of the things I love about it is the way she includes quotes and essays from Catholics as fellow Christians who take social justice seriously.

So, the book is divided into the seasons, and within each section are recipes and menus. Each recipe starts with tasters comments and hints. At the end of each recipe is a poem, essay, verse or quote. They are so thought provoking that sometimes I will sit down with a cup of tea and just read through them.

It is not a story, but it is a good read. This is a soul-nurturing book for me. But it is a cookbook.

I hope that helps...

Oh yeah!! It is my absolute favorite cookbook. It is a cookbook with little snippets written and scattered throughout. Most of our favorite recipes, and they are usually healthy and have veggies, are from this book.
Highly recommend it!

Thanks Michelle and Anne. I might have to hint to my dh that I would like this book myself!
