Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My mom has asked me for suggestions of books she can give my brother for Christmas. This is the brother who lost his wife very suddenly August 31. He has a 15 yr old daughter who doesn't live with him. He is very alone and is depressed and probably drinking.

Is there a book that might reach him, give him hope and help him start again? Any other gift suggestions are also appreciated.

Thanks.

Hands down, A Grief Observed, by CS Lewis.   It is his journal entries after Joy (his wife) died. I found this book VERY helpful and comforting.

I second Molly's suggestion and would add Fr. Groeschel's The Tears of God

Oh, I also think A Severe Mercy by Sheldon Vanauken would be very consoling.

Music can be very comforting and healing after a loss such as your brother has suffered. When my sil died this Summer we made a CD for my bil of songs that deal with loss. He was very appreciative. It was particularly meaningful since he had chosen significant music for her memorial (they are not Catholic) that they had listened to together during her years of illness... music had been especially healing for their souls.

Here are some songs that might be helpful for your brother:
"I Can Only Imagine" MercyMe
"Come Back to Me" Lisa Bevill
"Home Free" Wayne Watson
"Live Forever" Michael W. Smith
"After the Rain" Aaron and Jeoffrey
"It Is Well" 4HIM
"Mighty to Save" Michael W. Smith
"Tender Reed" Lisa Bevill
"Let the Healing Begin" 4HIM
"This Is Home" Switchfoot
"When the Rain Comes" Third Day
"Raging Sea" Michael W. Smith
"In Better Hands" Natalie Grant
"Cry Out to Jesus" Third Day
"I Will Be With You" Lisa Bevill
"I'll Lead You Home" Michael W. Smith
"Love's Sweet Name" Cindy Morgan
"Finally Home" MercyMe
"If My People Pray" Avalon
"Safe With Me" Lisa Bevill
"Praise You in This Storm" Casting Crowns
"Tears of the Saints" Leeland

MercyMe's entire album, "Undone" was written after several members had suffered great losses, and the music is very comforting and inspiring.
