Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Wow, I don't think I have ever posted on the Arts threads!! I thought you all might have some great input, (like you do everywhere else here! ) about something I want to do for my son. My 15yo ds has wanted to be an architect since he could say "architect". He as a keen eye for such things. He has requested house plan magazines since he was 8 or 9. He LOVES them. We are always touring the "house tours" of all the extravagant homes they have in the Fall and Spring, it is a tradition of ours now.

He has no confidence in his drawing skills.....like free hand drawing. One of the last homes we toured had a "nationally known and published in all of the house plan magazines" architect and as we were talking to him...he said the best thing to do is draw, all of the time!! My son lost a little confidence, and said, "I just don't draw well!!" He can whip out house plans on a grid, on graph paper....but free hand drawing isn't a strength, and I want to help him as much as possible working on the skills he needs to succeed with this passion of his.

My questions...
Any architects out there? What do you think? What should we focus on as we go through high school? He is excellent in math and science.....He has taken a basic drawing class at a local college of the arts...and did well, and we hope to do more like that class.

Any books that you find especially helpful for older students that need more confidence?

Thanks!!

I would think learning some form of AutoCAD (or another computer-aided design program) would be the best option.
ETA: here is a link for some open-source (free) AutoCad alternatives.
CAD open source

If you have or aquire a membership in the Homeschool buyers co-op you can buy a three year membership to Mark Kistler's Online Art Lessons for $39.95. He does a good job of explaining the concepts behind drawing as well as the how-to's of drawing.

As someone who has been miserable at drawing I can say that Mark Kistler's books have helped me do better at drawing what is in front of me.

Basically however the best way to learn to draw is to do a lot of it. Spend time outside sketching houses (This web site with links and recommended books looks interesting http://www.squidoo.com/house-drawing )

The people who produce the Draw, Write,Now books also sell a introductory drafting course (scroll half way down the page) http://www.drawyourworld.com/Catalog/HTML/sketch1.html which may be helpful as well.
