Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are expecting a new baby in July but I just received some disturbing news...my thyroid is functioning low. Many things that i don't even want to consider can happen to the baby as a result of this. My doctor has just prescribed medicine to jump-start my thyroid. But doesn't a sluggish thyroid mean I'm requiring Iodine? In that case, can't I just take pure Iodine, as found in Celtic Sea Salt? From what I've heard, the sea salt helps to actually restore thyroid function.

I guess I'm looking for advice and prayers here. But I will call my doctor today and try to sort this out. I like to move things along as naturally as possible, but I don't want to endanger the baby by my granola tendencies. Anyway, prayers are so powerful and would be deeply felt here.

Praying for you Tina.

The iodine won't help if you are low in thyroid hormone which is most likely the case. The thyroid hormone is necessary for your body to be able to use the iodine in the first place.

Praying you get these thyroid issues resolved very quickly.

I'm going to start calling you Dr. Susan! I just got off the phone with my OB's nurse. I asked a ton of questions and the answers were very reassuring. She said I'm on such a low dose of Synthrax (or whatever it's called) because I have just a *little* low thyroid function. She also said that at such a low dose, the more severe side effects are highly unlikely. And that there's nothing more homeopathic that I could do to replace the hormone. My mom was 42 (same as me) when she had my sister who has Down's Syndrome. Mom blamed it on her hypothyroidism, which, at the time, she wasn't aware of. I explained what happened with my mom and she said Down's Syndrome is another thing entirely and is not associated with low thyroid function.

I feel relieved. There were times that I quietly cried on the phone, but I don't think she heard it in my voice. Sometimes I hate sympathetic people. Only because I hate to let people know I'm out of control. I was worrying about this for a whole day. I wouldn't even look up what kind of issues low thyroid can cause with a baby because I was afraid that the more I knew, the more I would worry. Ignorance is bliss, you know.

I am so blessed to call you all my friends. Please keep up your prayers!

Praying for you Tina!

one thing that helped me tremendously was going to a natural health practitioner for advice in eating while pregnant...it did help a lot and made me feel a lot stronger! I had other issues, but I would recommend this for anyone.

Take good care of you, mama!

I'll keep you in my prayers, Tina -- and congratulations!

About the sea salt... while it sounds as if it might not get you off the medication, I would highly recommend Celtic sea salt anyway. With all the trace elements, it's just a lot healthier than refined salt... and it tastes SO much better. I ran out a while back and have started craving salty stuff again -- which I didn't once I started using the sea salt. So obviously there's something in it my body needs that it's not getting anywhere else.
