Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

It's 13 days before Christmas and I can not shake the funk I'm in. It just amazes me how my mood effects the entire household, my kids are crabby and quarrelsome and my dh is quiet. We moms really are the heart of the home!

So, what do you do for yourself when you realize you are in a "funk" and need to get out of it? Please, nothing with chocolate!! I have to save face on the holiday exercise thread.

Thanks!

I get into the sunshine. Even if you don't have SAD, spending time in the sun (sitting by a window, for example) can do a lot for your mood.

If it's gloomy outside, I light candles and sit near them.

I'd agree with Nancy, go for a walk, either with the children or without can really help.

Is it just too awful to suggest exercise ;)

Sometimes it helps me to really clean something--something small so I can actually finish it! Do you have a cluttered desk? Or a junk drawer that is really bothering you? One messy surface? Clearing out the physical junk and clutter always feels so therapeutic to me.

Is it cold there? if it is.. maybe indulging in some extra heat in the house.. there are times during the winter here.. it's so cold and I get tired of being cold.. that I throw extra wood on the fire (cheap heat so I can justify it easier) and crank up some summery tunes and dance with the kids to the peppy music.

A cinnomony-y candle might help too.. (or simmer cinnamon in a pot) cinnamon is a mood lifter but also relaxing without being sleep inducing.

Turn up the music! I'll put on something upbeat and dance around singing as loud as I can. It helps!

Go to bed early tonight and then try to get into a good bedtime/waking-up time pattern. That along with eating healthy (you're right - don't resort to the chocolate ) and getting outside for sunshine and fresh air. At least that's what works for me! I hope you feel more "up" soon!

Peace,
Nancy

Okay, add another point to the "I'm such a loser, I can't even count, my kids are doomed..."

We like Larry's Christmas Countdown to help us keep the days straight.. and sometimes provide a laugh.

Cod Liver Oil. Its gross, but it helps with SAD. A mom here recommended it to me when I was struggling and it made a huge difference.

I also light tons of candles this time of year, scented for the season, and keep nice mellow upbeat music playing in the main rooms.

Be nice to yourself. Do the bare minimum for school, plan easy dinners and curl up with a good light read and hot tea. Sometimes we are so much harder on ourselves than God would be. Maybe you just need some down time?

Our current fave "get mom out of a funk" is playing Annie's "The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow" followed by "Little Girls." My girls love those songs, and it just makes me laugh to pretend to be Miss Hannigan

Crafting.....it really helps me. I am in the same boat, Friend..feeling listless and tired. For different reasons, we both have been through the wringer the last few weeks....and it is SOOOOO DARK in this part of the woods, isn't it??? I heard there will be sun tomorrow.....get out in it, even if it is next to a window.

I have missed my exercise all week. I am going to try to do it today. But I am also going to sew or knit....or both....and read some Tasha Tudor. (at the suggestion of our dear Marilyn).

Music is definitely a mood lifter for us, either gentle Mozart or Vivaldi...or Chris Rice singing "Love Like Crazy"......I love that song, I don't like the rappy kind of stuff in the end, but I love the lyrics and it is an energy boost for me. Steven Curtis Chapman has a few songs like that, too, like, "Dive".

When I get that listless feeling, I also try to read to the kids, it is calming to me and them, and I don't feel like such a loser that I haven't "done" anything with them. Curl up on the couch and read some today....they'll be calmed by your presence.

Sending prayers your way!!!

I second this....but for me, it has to be MY crafting...I just can handle the kids messes right now, so if I am crafting with them, I clear everything off the table and do one short activity that isn't too messy. My own knitting and crafting and sewing certainly helps my moods. (that sounds very selfish, but I think in the long run, a peaceful momma helps everyone)

All that we seem to be doing around here right now is reading aloud, and that does seem to help everyone's moods.

-cod liver oil
-exercise
-sunshine (or a light box if you live in the northern hemisphere because the angle of the sun isn't strong enough in the winter)
-coffee with heavy whipping cream
-upbeat music
-a fun favorite movie ... or two

- I know you said nothing with chocolate but seriously I need it. I get the 70% dark chocolate from Aldi. I only need 1/2 piece (78 calories) to satisfy the need. :-)
