Christmas shopping is just about done for me, except for ds18. He will be leaving for bootcamp in April, and including various schools, will be gone for about a year.
I need ideas for gifts for him. Someone suggested good sunglasses, a shaving kit, stationary. Any other ideas? Would this bag be too nice or girly for a Marine recruit?
I hope to find him something fun, too, but at his age all the "fun" stuff costs too much!
Thanks!

What about something he can DO before April? tickets to a ball game or theatre or a movie.. or a paid for golf game or bowling.. or.. gosh I guess it would depend on what's around there.

Stationery is good; also a book of stamps. My nephew wrote LOTS of letters in boot camp.
If he has a cell phone, extra minutes (for after boot camp ends...they don't get much phone time) would be a very very very welcome gift.
Yes to the sunglasses.
They will be issued a duffel bag (don't know if Marines call it a sea bag the way sailors do).
Does he have a watch with a reliable alarm? Always a good thing to have! Same with a decent wallet, running shoes (pricey, I know), workout gear (Marines work out a LOT), toiletry bag/dopp kit, etc.
He's still going to enjoy the things he likes now, so if he's into iTunes or whatever, gift cards are nice. I like Jodie's idea of things to do before he heads off in April, too.

All those ideas are good. A lot of things will be confiscated so it's just not worth bringing.
Stationery and stamps sound really good.
What my husband did for a friend who was in basic training was write letters to him on the back sides of news printouts. They don't get to read newspapers or magazines so he would print out what he thought was something interesting and write letters on the other side.

I bought this exact bag in black for all the men in our lives a few years back. It is really nice and durable.
