Someday...hopefully...we will get a table that actually fits all 7 of us at once. Since my parents are also frequent guests, we would like to buy a table that seats 10...or more (with leaves I suppose).
Those of you that have tables that seat 8+ very comfortably, how long are they? I see pictures and dimensions online that say "seats 8-10!" but those numbers vary wildly, and sometimes I'll see the table in person and it doesn't look that big. I'd love to hear from people in the trenches - what's the length of your table and how many does it seat with a little elbow room? Because if we are going to spend the money on a table, we'd hate to get one that leaves us all jabbing each other.

Amy,
We were generously gifted with a beautiful burl wood inlaid table when my dh's grandmother passed away a few years ago. The table is 75 inches long and 45 inches wide. Additionally, there are two leafs each 18 inches wide. If I put both leafs in, the table is long and wide enough to have 10 chairs around it. The chairs have HIGH backs and arms on all of them. Everyone has plenty of room for elbows, etc.

My father made me the most beautiful 9ft long table about three years ago, it's 3 feet wide as I wanted length more then width. There are 11 of us and it is cramped when we have company now! I tease my dad that he needs to make me another one. The children playfully set his place at the table in the most cramped and uncomfortable spot so they can plead for another table.
Are there any Amish around you? Maybe you could go check out some of their work before you buy? There used to be a store in Culpeper, VA that sold Amish furniture.

This table is about 7 ft long (almost 9 ft with leaf) and over 3 ft wide. We bought it in anticipation of a large family (we're not quite there yet )because we loved the table and the quality, and we thought the price wasn't bad, either. I would think it should sit 10 easily.

We have a table that seats 6 comfortably day-to-day and it's 44" wide x 72" long. We then have two 18" leaves that extend it to allow a seating of 10 making it 108" long. I think the difference in making one table seat more (or less) is really in the chairs. Our table (without the leaves) could prob. fit 8 if we had smaller chairs so with the leaves, we could then seat 12. Plus also look at where the legs are and how big they are as that can affect how many chairs to put around it.
HTH,

DH is going to be making me the mack-daddy of tables. It's going to be at least 3 1/2 ft wide, and probably closer to 4 (we like big dishes ). Probably about 10 ft long.
(We were gifted pre-WWII heart of pine, that had been the flooring in a WWII era warehouse that was being torn down--some pieces are 12, 14, and 16 ft...).
I'm just looking forward to having the thing DONE, as we're stuffing ourselves around a table meant for 6 at most, and there are 7 of us.

Our table without leaves is 4' wide and 6' long. We need to sit 9 everyday, so we put in three 1' leaves and have 10 chairs around, very comfortably. So 9' length would seat 10, and we have average sized chairs, no arms.
