Does anyone know of a morally allowable method for a young man to be tested for infertility before marriage? A friend of my husband's had chicken pox in his 20s and it was really bad. He is a little concerned about fertility because of it, and wouldn't want to marry if infertile.

Thanks for any help.

I asked dh (moral theology professor) and a good friend who has had lots of experience of infertility and the Paul VI Institute (and now is, happily, expecting her first baby in March!). I will let you know if either of them comes back with anything.

I hope you can find information for your friend on fertility testing options. I do know that the condition that might be of concern with a very servere case of chicken pox after puberty is orchitis. It can lead to sterility or decreased fertility, but it is an extremely rare side effect of the disease. He would have had to have had organs besides the skin and lungs affected.

There is such a thing as a perforated condom which would allow the collection of a sample while still being moral for Catholics. I don't have anymore information than that, unfortunately.
I've never heard of chicken pox causing infertility, though...

This method only works if you are married . . .

Gosh Pilgrim, maybe you could encourage him to consider that he still might be called to marraige even if infertile. Even if he could find a morally acceptable fertility test, it is never 100% accurate. Ya' just never know... Who knows? the woman he marries may be infertile. Either you are called to marraige or you are not. Fertile or not. He may just be asking the wrong questions right now. It sounds like he needs some guidance in another direction.

Exactly what I wanted to say Stephanie (St. Ann)!

I'll pray for his discernment.

Thankyou for allthe responses. Yes, I totally agree that infertility does not mean he is not called to marriage.

It's funny, you said exactly what a good friend and I were discussing this evening, St. Ann. She and I were discussing that there is always adoption, even if a couple are unable to conceive their own children. I just thought I'd throw the question out there.

I know of the perforated c****m for marrieds, but just wondered about singles. I think his admirable integrity just felt it wouldn't e right to ask a girl to marry himif he were infertile, but I believe God has other ideas for him. Please pray for him for discernment and grace, as he is courting a young lady at the time.
