Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I purchased Tell Me More this year because it came so highly recommended. After the program arrived, I downloaded it and the dc having been using it very successfully. Until now.

They completed the Introductory lessons and moved on to Lesson 1 on the main cd. My ds seems to be doing well, but my dd (who struggles with languages) has given up. I tried to review with them some today using the booklet that my dh had printed out. It has been a long time since I had any Spanish and we learned it in a completely different format.

It seems to have really taken off after the first set of lessons in Lesson 1. She is using the guided mode which works best for her. But she is not learning the vocabulary. I looked at it yesterday and was surprised at some of the words that were included. I ended up using my spanish dictionary from college to look up the words.

I am certain this all operator error and that I am doing something incredible wrong in the way that I am using the program. Does anyone have any advice that can help me out. I really don't want my dd to give up on learning a new language, but it is apparent that the gap between her and my ds is widening.

Advice? Clues?

Thanks so much.

Carole:

All I can recommend for vocabulary is lots of review. I'm looking for a Spanish vocab game or something myself. BUT, we use Practice Makes Perfect. The more lingual of our kids like it and do very well. And then there's our aural learner. He begged to do Spanish instead of Latin because Latin was too difficult. Now he's wondering why we need a foreign language. I try to verbalize short sentences (I minored in Italian, not Spanish!) and basic vocabulary so that he can hear it. Between that and a bit of hand-holding through lessons, he's making progress. We also use LiveMocha.com so the kids can do a variety of exercises and hear the spoken language, but it only took us 1/2 a year using it once per week.

Thanks, Tina. I really need to do something because she is having such difficulty. She keeps telling me that she cannot learn languages (we spent several years with Latin and they did pretty well until we moved into Henle).

Her attitude is to just plow through the program without really understanding the language. This program was so highly recommended, but it really seems to jump within the lesson in the level of difficulty. I really thought there was some key to the program that I was not understanding that perhaps some of the other moms could clue me into. I could completely understand an "operator error" type situation since that happens to me quite a bit.

what if you found some type of English derivative or root word (having studied Latin, this should be a breeze!) that she could relate the words to? I seem to remember playing word games with myself ("sounds like ... ") to remember Italian vocabulary. Look! I just found tons of vocabulary games onthis site! There are many other sites, too. Just type "Spanish vocabulary game" into google. I was actually looking for a hands-on flash card type game that all of my three Spanish students could play together, but they might like this.
