Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone overcome, or does anyone know someone who overcame the fear of flying/high places? My daughter suffers terribly with it and it is not good! She was supposed to be getting on a flight at 6:30 this morning and we couldn't get her to leave the house. Thank goodness, her wonderful fiance agreed to drive, with the condition she try to get some help before the wedding. Just wondering if therapies work, or if maybe she just needs to be medicated (for the whole week leading up to the flight, by the way. She talked herself in and out of her fear all week long.)
Any thoughts?

I have a fear of flying, but nothing as bad as that. I have never not gotten on a flight. I know meds help many people - but in my own irrational mind they would prevent me from doing something if there was a crash.

I have learned some coping techniques. Not thinking about it ahead of time. Going to confession the day of the flight or the day before. I focus on the flight attendants. If they are happy - things are ok. I always try to visualize the pilot before the flight. He has no desire to crash the plane. He is very motivated to get us where we are going. I pray a rosary during takeoff and landing and anytime I get nervous. A personal DVD player with a good movie to distract me. I would love some noise canceling headphones - maybe one of these days. I tell myself - do you want to live a life where you never fly? Where you never travel? Where you don't see loved ones? Of course I don't.

Some of those ideas above are tough if I am flying with the kids - then I just need to grow up, I tell myself and hold it together for them.   I am actually better when I am alone with the kids.

I met a psychiatrist once whose whole practice was helping people overcome the fear of flying. The final session was when he would take them on the flight. I imagine he charged a big sum but he claimed lots of success.

Just my thoughts....

i have heard that therapy can work for this type of phobia.

my solution has been to not fly anymore, ever, so that is probably no help at all.

This is me I last stepped on a plane in January of 1997. I have terrible dreams about being somewhere in which the only way home is by plane. They are awful. I keep wondering, how in the world did I get here if the only way out is by flying. I never end up getting on the plane in my dreams
