I hope to blog with a tutorial in early Dec, but I wanted to share a couple of photos here now.
St Apollonia is our 'tooth fairy' but for a while I've wanted something to put out the night the tooth is to be collected. So I bought a cheap wooden art manikin and paper mached around it.
Last night my Joseph lost a tooth, so it was popped on the end of the 'fork' (you see similar paintings of St Apollonia with a tooth sitting between pinchers, that look similar to this) and then it is 'collected' the next morning the tooth was gone and the money was sitting on St Appolonia's gold platter!
Tried to make the face myself...a disaster!! So I found a great painting of an elderly lady, (Michael Sweert's "Old Woman Spinning") and printed up her face and put that on instead, much, much better! Many paintings depict St Apollonia as a young woman, but whe was an elderly widow, so I've stayed true to that.
She looks solemn, but then if I had all my teeth ripped out without painkillers, I'd be looking much worse!

Wow Anne, I don't think I could do this one, but she is awesome.
Guess what...my Rosie lost her first tooth yesterday too!
She is feeling very special. She got a fifty cent piece in her little jar of water. That's about how flexible my creative bones are at present.
Love to all

That is so gorgeous! I sewed a little felt St Apollonia to hold my son's first loose tooth and the resulting penny which was far less of a wow! It is hard to a nice looking old lady face for me too - ours looks a bit like Robin Williams as Mrs Doubtfire which wasn't the look I was going for. In my research, starting off thinking she was an elderly black lady, I read that she may not have been elderly at all, and that the word that suggests that may just mean she was a deaconess or something similar. It makes for interesting conversations when people ask our gappy boy about the tooth fairy coming!

Reviving this old thread. St Apollonia's feast was a couple of weeks ago and I showed this to my 6yo and now guess what I am going to make
I am hoping that Annie can share any tips or warnings for this endeavor. Has anyone else tried anything like this and can give me some pointers? I haven't done paper mache in nearly 30 years, so this is going to be fun I have my mannikin (I bought 2 just in case) and just need some confidence to get started
Beth
