We are going with dh to DC in 2 weeks! He has some big meeting in the capital and we decided to tag along for a field trip.
If you only had 2 days in Dc what would you do? And how?
We plan on taking the "tube", "T", subway, whatever they call public transportation there. Not sure exactly where we are staying yet.
We used to live in Va and have done the Air and Space, Zoo, and a few monuments--funny how when you live close you don't find it a priority to go to these tourist attractions.  We want to see something new.
Anyhow, the cathedral is my priority and then ??
Would love to try White House, Capital and some of the veteran memorials. Just my ideas.
I have a 12 year old who will be into all of it and a 6 year old who won't
Any ideas for places to go? What to do together so we aren't walking/riding all over?

Unfortunately if you are going in two weeks you don't have time to get tickets. Those have to be arranged in advance through your congressman - I think 30 days is the minimum. Many of hte other places you mentioned also require advance tickets but those can be done online and are based on availability. The sooner you get them the better. We have waited too long before and not had any available for the dates we were there.
There was a recent thread where suggestions were given for sites to see in DC. I'll try to look for that later to link here. It had some good ideas. I put a plug in for Ford's Theater and their new museum - it's great and I think a must see for this 200th anniversary year of Lincoln's birth.

I loved the Lincoln Monument, your 12 year old won't forget climbing those stairs and looking out!!
Of course, the National Shrine, especially the lower level.
Any museums.

If you plan to visit the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception you might also want to check out the Fransican Monastery which is right across the street.
You may be able to get tickets the day of for the Supreme Court. Also, I hear the Library of Congress is very cool. Get in line early for the National Archives Museum it would tie in nicely with a visit to Ford Theatre.
Last week we had a field trip the the Newseum what an amazing museum. Unfortunately it is not free. We were there almost the whole day and still left feeling like we could have been there longer.
You might want to spend one day at the Shrine and Monastery (if you decide to visit there) and another day doing the monuments and museums. Sometimes when we go down, we hit a few exhibits at a few museums. You can definitely walk the Mall and way better to walk it in cool weather than say July. I really like the WWII Memorial at Sunset, it is all lit up. If you have lots of energy, you could do some museums early in the day, I think they open at 10:00 then hit the monuments and memorials after lunch. It is a lot of walking but we have done them all in a day. I think we usually start at Jefferson, walk the Tidal Basin, FDR, cross the street to get to Lincoln, Korean War and Vietnam then finally walk along the reflecting pool to WWII. WEAR GOOD SHOES!
There is also the 9/11 Memorial on the grounds of the Pentagon now.
There are lots of hot dog carts (  but easy) all over, if you don't want to carry a lot of stuff. There is also a McD's in Air and Space.
If your dh has meetings at the Capitol he might be able to get you a tour. I just visited the US Capitol website and you can try to reserve tickets without going through your Congressman or Senator. Also, there is a new Visitor Center for the Capitol (I have not been there yet) which is free and you do not need tickets.
Hope that didn't send your head spinning with too many possibilities.

When we were there this summer a friend who works down there recommended the food court in the lower level of the Reagan Building. They have a lot of variety of food choices - prices seemed about average for that type of fare. It's very convenient, a block from the National Museum of American History - which is now open after a recent total renovation. It was well worth seeing - especially the new exhibit of the Star Spangled Banner, the President's sections, and Transportation history exhibit.

OH, what to do???
Thank you all for the suggestions and hints. Great idea to try to get a tour if dh is actually at the Capital. I need to check on that-I was pretty sure he said he'd be there, but nowadays one never knows. He might not even be able to tell me...it may be top secret info
I rarely take advantage of his travels but for some reason I can't pass this one by. Thanks for helping...
