I don't know much about yoga.
My dd 14 liked a class she did at a 4H event last year. She also thinks the best part of her taekwondo class is the stretching
I was thinking of maybe a yoga DVD in her stocking. But two questions...
1. is yoga new-agey? or is it something that can be okay but could be over the top if you get the wrong thing, kwim?
2. got any recommendations????

I love the exercise and quietness of yoga but depending on the teacher/DVD these can really get very new-agey or simply focus on eastern religious concepts that are distinctly non-Christian (such as emptying the mind into void and stuff like that). I know some good Christian women won't go near yoga for just that reason. You may want to research a little more about the style of yoga your daughter enjoys and make sure it is in line with your values.
That said, I take yoga the YMCA and love it. I consider it athletic stretching and nothing more. Because it is taught in an overtly Christian atmosphere, there is no chanting, visualization or anything that might be problematic for me. They do call the "prayer" type pose, namaste, but that is pretty much the only remotely spiritual/religious part of the program.
I'm afraid I don't have any recommendations. The only yoga DVD I own is for pregnant women!

I have always had the impression that yoga is incompatible with our Catholic faith. Your question prompted me to search a little bit about why. Here's what I found at Catholic Answers:
Q: Is it okay for Catholics to use yoga as part of an exercise program? What about in physical education for children?
A: Two factors are relevant here: First, it depends on whether the yoga is being presented in a manner that is free of religious elements-i.e., purely as a system of physical exercise. If it is coupled with elements of Hindu spirituality (e.g., talk about moving kundalini, or energy, around your body), it is not appropriate for Catholics to use it as part of their exercise routine. Children are not mature in their thinking, and while an adult who is firm in his faith might be able to go to an "iffy" yoga exercise class without danger of being attracted to Hindu spirituality, a child well might not. If a child is being put in danger of being attracted to Hindu spirituality-either now or in the future-by the program, then it is not appropriate.
There's a lot more out there on this topic. I would say do some searching among reliable, authentic Catholic sources before buying any yoga DVD's for your daughter.
Blessings,

and DON'T get the yoga videos that are at Target. Good grief. I bought it because I have arthritis pretty significantly all over, and my doc said it would be good to stretch like that.....this video not only had the stuff mentioned above, it was like yoga on speed or something. I'll stick to Leslie Sansone.
Kacky, what about Pilates? From what I see, there are a lot of similarities, without the new agey stuff. Maybe you both could pop into a class somewhere and just take a look, or get a video from the library.

You read my mind! I was wondering about that too in the past day or so, pilates is that is. Mostly curious about any "spiritual" stuff that may come with it...none???
I'm actually thinking about figuring out how to try this after I have baby in March for me for sure!
Thanks for the tips ladies! Made my decision easy :-)

I love love love yoga . I got out of it for about 5 yrs when I joined the church thinking it was not right or good . wow was I wrong ! My body went from being in great shape to low energy , bad health etc. My mantra , paryer , chant whatever you wish to call it is now the name of Jesus prayer something monks use and others in meditation . On the other hand I also think people need now yoga is a hindu philosophy etc. You can turn your yoga however into a Christian / Catholic philosophy meditations on nature etc. are wonderful and God gave nature to all His people being connected to His creation is wonderful meditation . You can add meditations of the rosary , stations etc. My catechism class did yoga and focused on our nativity meditation for a very long time I was impressed at how the kids did so well .
You can research info on wikipedia for factual info . There is an excellent yoga book for teens I think it is even titled yoga for teens . There are many yoga dvd that will just focus on the movment aspect of yoga and are a very safe bet staying away from the spiritual side . I would read review on websites of books & dvd and then check your library . Our library alone has over 500 some books on yoga .
Yoga for children is usually pretty safe poses are uslay in regards to fun meditations and mimicing animal or nature poses .

I do Yoga with a casual nature - and focus on prayer while doing it, I know enough about it that I don't use a program or DVD. I do however, prefer pilates. I'm not quite sure what my mornings would be like without my pilates! Again, I don't use a DVD any more, because I do the program from memory now; however I started with a DVD from Mari Winsor. There is no spiritual side to pilates, only stretching and focused strengthening.
Historically, I've focused on Yoga during pregnancy (with a simple prenatal DVD - no spiritual nature about it), then after birthing my babies, I return to pilates for the core strengthening aspect of it.
