Hey folks!
I have been collecting those nice tins that cookies or other treats come in from the thrift store lately, and I had an idea for them.
Why not use them for Montessori storage, or whatever storage? Here's how I'm using mine:
* A nice red, white and blue tin with America on the lid and pictures of our countryside will hold my 50 states/capitals cards, and probably our Scrambled States card game
* A rectangular tin that says "Grandma's Best Cookies" will hold recipe cards which I plan to laminate and put on a ring for my little guy to cook with. I might also just put some cookie cutters and a couple of recipes for home-made playdough too.
* A gorgeous tin I found at an estate sale with pictures of flowers with their name and Latin name, as well as quotes by famous authors will hold nature study cards or anything else nature study related.
* I'm finding lots of Christmas-themed tins, and these can store many nice Montessori activities.
I'm just listing these for possible ideas, but I think these might make great storage. I find them for around 25 to 50 cents each. I don't think you can find storage with that kind of character for that kind of price!

Hey, Vicki!
It is so good to see you post again, especially in this forum. I was just thinking of you as I read through some of your Thanksgiving ideas from last year.
Love the tin idea!

What a clever idea! I always grab a few of these at garage sales because they are so pretty, and then I'm stumped for ideas on how to use them. Thanks!

not that it's early childhood.. but metal tins are also pest proof if the lid closes well.. so you can use them for storage out of the house as well (like in our attached garage) I use big popcorn tins for putting pasta and dried fruits (raisins, dates) and chocolate chips and such in my garage pantry.
I also save some empty for Christmas for putting new goodies into.. so I have tins for putting our fudge and such into which also lets me store it in the garage.. it stays cold out there but just above freezing usually so making things pest proof means I can use it as a giant walk in refrigerator

Jodie,
I have to disagree about the pest proof. For two years my dh grandfather bought us these large tins full of popcorn which we took the plastic layer off the top ate a little of the popcorn closed the tin lid and forgot about. Sure enough about a couple weeks later we realized the tin was infested with ants. It happened twice (we're slow learners).
My guess is the cold keeps most pests from getting in your pantry, so it is probably still safe.
But I thought I'd warn others if they were going to put food in them.
