I'll spare you all the saga of what has been going on with this pregnancy from day one, but the short of it is that I had a massive bleed last week that landed me in the hospital. I left still pregnant and cautiously optimist. The bleeding lasted only an hour- but it was massive.
Then when the MW (not my regular midwife, as she doesn't deal with hospitals) received the US report from the hospital, she said it was inconclusive - weird b/c the ER doc said everything looked great.
Anyway, long story short, I had a repeat ultrasound today and everything looks perfect and healthy, evidently the ultrasound last week only detected a massive hematoma an no pregnancy. Today it detected a very small hematoma (no kidding, I bleed it all out last week!!) and a perfectly healthy pregnancy - only dated 3 days smaller than my calculations and 5 days smaller than LMP. The same tech that did it last week did today's. She said with a big smile what a marked difference from last week, as she didn't expect to have good news for me today.
Granted, I'm not *exactly* sure when I ovulated, but I feel confident with in a day or so. So my question is, is measuring smaller than dates in early pregnancy normal? Can they really be off 5 days either way? Also, any of you that had subchorionic hematomas, how did you 'treat' it? Bedrest, activity restrictions? Should I expect to bleed again?
I will probably have a repeat ultrasound in a week or so. Any input would be great!!

Wow--no advice but what a roller coaster--and just as you are worrying about a move. Could you have miscarried a twin? Isn't that pretty common?
I have heard that ultrasounds in the first eight weeks are pretty accurate but if your ovulation guess is off by even a day or two then a five day differential would probably put you within the margin of error.
I will keep you in prayer.

First, so happy you had great news today, and sooo glad you and baby are okay!!!
As to sizing, US can be off quite a bit. My friend was told that if the age is within two weeks, you're good, but that was pertaining to a later ultrasound. It's not an exact science.
Sorry, no experience or info on the hematomas.

Well let me tell you the story of my dear second child, who turns TEN tomorrow! I know exactly when we conceived (compulsive charters back then  ), it was my 30th birthday.  about 13 days later, an HPT showed positive. So off we go to the early ultrasounds (I was with a doctor who was big on those at the time as he was primarily an infertility doc).
First ultrasound found no sac. I was sent back the next week. Second ultrasound found "something" and I was guessed to be 5+ weeks (I was 7+). Finally a week or so later there is a tiny baby with a heartbeat, measuring 14 days earlier than she should be!
Seriously we KNOW when we conceived and their "sure thing" ultrasounds are telling me that I conceived her AFTER my positive home pregnancy test. Right.
Our firstborn was also said to be earlier/smaller on two early ultrasounds, and we know again exactly when conceived as we were undergoing infertility testing and that was the month they figured out when I ovulated.
Talk of these early ultrasounds always gets me angry, because back when I had my first two babies and was having these strange ultrasounds, I started hearing about many many women who were also having the same thing - especially ultrasounds where they were finding a sac and no baby and being told "GO GET A D&C, it's hopeless". They tell these poor women "Early ultrasounds are such an exact science, we're not wrong" (I've had this said to me!). So the woman trusts, and believes there is no baby because something went wrong...but if they had just waited, and had another U/S later, it may not have been the case, it was just too early to tell!
Lisa, it's not an exact science (as you can tell from my stories) and I hope all is perfectly well with your baby! I'll go kiss my soon to be 10 year old and pray for your precious family.

yes not exact at all.. I found an article from medscape.com that I waded through.. and it appears that ultrasounds have a 8% error rate.. which means at 8weeks gestation (10 weeks or so LMP) that's +/- 5 days

I researched this when I had an ultrasound at 30 weeks with my now 5yo. He was measuring bigger than expected and they wanted to move my due date back 3 weeks! This was crazy to me as I knew exactly when I had conceived and had the charts to prove it. Thankfully my midwife stayed with my dates. Anyway, the earlier they ultrasound, the more accurate it is for dating purposes,,,mostly because they have other markers to look for, development changes so much from week to week in the first trimester. The further along you are, the less accurate dating is. When I got home and looked this up, I found out that at 30 weeks, the ultrasound dating had a margin of error of 3 weeks! Anyway...my water broke the day of the due date *I* calculated,,,, . Durn hospital still put that my baby was 3 weeks "overdue".

My dh laughed when he read your post and said "Tell her about our first" then I read Amy's and I can tell you that we were exactly the same story. I knew exactly when I had conceived and they were telling me I had conceived when my DH was out of town!!!!
It ended up being a HUGE deal later on because as a very niave first time mom I let them change my due date to two weeks earlier. I know, I know what was I thinking????? We ended up being extemely lucky during an induction (They changed my date to the 14th of June but let me go until my original due date, the 30th of June,) When she was born she was covered in vernix and the docotr actually said, "wow, I guess she was early"
So to end my ramble, yes the us dates can be off even up to 5 days 
Oh and as to those late ultrasounds, my last one was "8lbs 1 oz" according to techs at 37 weeks and the doctors were freaking out. I still wouldn't let them induce and he was born at 39 weeks 3 days and amazing weighed only 7 lbs 11 oz. HUMMMMMM....

Lisa, first of all, glad you're doing better. What a scare you had!
I concur w/the others - u/s dates can be off. My understanding from my OB is that is why the 18 week one is so important: it is the ~ideal~ window for dating a pregnancy. He explained to me that at other points in the pregnancy, particularly later, it is hard to tell a compromised baby from an immature one.

Congrats! That is good news. Being off a few days or even a week is no big deal. I bet the hematoma was hiding the little baby. I have had my share of early ultrasounds. They can be so anxiety producing!

I had some bleeding with my third pregnancy early on, and an ultrasound showed a subchorionic hematoma. It was fairly small, and had dissolved by the time I had my 18 week ultrasound. I don't remember if I was given any restrictions.
Hopefully it won't cause you any more problems!

Lisa,
I've had 2 subdural hematomas, pregnancy #3 and #7. With #3, the doc said expect to miscarry. I was a mess and worried for a long time. He is 10 now! With #7, different doc said no restrictions because this happens all the time with good outcomes. She is almost 2. I had pretty uneventful pregnancies with both of them. I never had a massive bleeding episode, just spotting.

Oops, a subdural hematoma is in the head! I think I must have one! I meant subchorionic hematoma! If I knew how to move the emoticon over here it would be the one blushing!

due to the two bleeding/clottign disorders I have, hematomas and bleeding are a permanent and regular part of my pregnancies which have gone to term.
I was put on bedrest, for various additional reasons as well, placenta previa, placenta tearing away from uterine wall, velamentous cord insertion, however, I appreciated the bedrest due to the unpredictable and HEAVY (sounds like ykwim!) bleeding which occured at whim.

Thanks everyone, for sharing your stories and encouragement. I know all of these things in my head - but my Mother Heart wants everything perfect for my baby, and I know, of course, that God already has everything perfectly planned.
I started this pregnancy bleeding. I actually thought I was starting a new cycle, and only after things not really 'getting started' after 3 days did I decide to do a HPT. Dh was with me and we were both shocked to see the second blue line appear! The bleeding lasted for 6 days, just a tad heavier than spotting. In that time I had 2 beta HCG tests and progesterone test, both of which were perfect.
Then the bleeding stopped for over a week, only for me to nearly pass out in my kitchen from the sudden blood loss! My dd (my kids were terrified - the blood just suddenly gushed down my legs!) had to call my husband, who rushed home from work and immediately took me to the ER. We both thought for sure we lost the baby.
I haven't had a spot of blood since then, which was over a week ago. The ultrasound was perfect yesterday - everything looks on target for 5 weeks 3 days. I figured I was exactly 6 weeks yesterday, and according to LMP - I would be 6 weeks 2 days. So I guess it was just off by 3 days. I'm going to keep my due date of July 4th going by LMP, simply because I like to say we are due on the 4th of July! We'll have another ultrasound around 8 weeks to check on development and the size of the hematoma.

Lisa, you may have also lost a twin. this is actually fairly common.
I wanted to add my most recent bedrest situation due to hematoma was because it was attached right onto the yolk sac. An orange compared to an almond type thing.

Lisa, Thanks! I lost a twin when I was pg with MB - it was very similar to what we are going through now, only we detected the twin via ultrasound at 6 weeks - MB was perfect with a strong heartbeat - his twin had an odd shaped sac and very very slow heartbeat. I 'finished' losing the twin around 14 weeks or so - as she continued to grow a bit. Bled till 16 weeks b/c a hematoma was left behind from the other baby.
There was no sign of a twin yesterday, but again, I know it's not an exact science.

Those early US really make my head spin. More than not they have told me that I was not as far along as I thought.
I am hoping that this time around they are not too off.
It is common.
