I read the Douay Rheims Bible for my personal study. The kids are starting to join me in reading the scriptures. They want their own bibles and I am torn. Do I purchase a Douay Rheims bible for them, and let them grow into some of the language (which is what I'm doing) or do I purchase a Revised Standard edition? I went online and compared a couple of scriptures. There is not that much of a difference, but there is a difference.

I am in no way saying the RSV is dumbed down, but do I stretch them by using the Douay or is that stretching them too far?

Hi Jenny,

I've been asking myself the same thing. We have many versions in the house, but mostly NIV and KJV. While I've been searching around the group rooms, I have seen many people using the different versions such as the Douay, and I wonder myself if I should possibly consider new Bibles for Christmas.

If anyone has any information, it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm planning to get my dd who is 9 a Douay Rheims soon. She has been asking for one for her very own

I'm hoping it will be something she'll treasure always. Put it under her pillow(although it may have to be put somewhere safer while she is still young), be her dear posession, be filled with highlighted verses(later on anyway, I think I'll hold off letting her do this until I feel she's the right age) and holy cards. Not something temporary where she later gets a different one. But thats just my thoughts.

I read to my children from the Douay Rheims(in addition to Childrens Bibles like Fr. Lovasik's New Catholic Childrens Bible etc.), and it always provides for good discussion where the language is not understood.

Have you thought of giving them a good Childrens Bible for their own until they are older? (if they are pre-teen that is, if they are already teens I'd go straight for a Douay Rheims) These are treasures that are wonderful to pass on through the generations too.
