Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

So, now that I'm done boot and skirt shopping, I've moved on to Advent Hymns . Since there is so much available via itunes and other on-line-music-stores, I've been searching for a few good hymns for Advent this year, besides Veni Emmanuel.

There are a few CD compilations of Advent Music...we can list them too, of course.   But I'm looking for your favorite individual hymns that reflect the prophecy, anticipation and annunciation of Advent. So, I thought I'd start a thread where we can list them as we discover them. It's more fun now, and not so costly, now that we can buy individual songs!!!!

But, feel free to list/link complete CDs too.

I'm listing the hymn and the one I found/liked the best from listening to the samples....just in case anyone doesn't feel called to listen to 20 different versions of "On Jordan's Bank" and agonize over which is your favorite and therefore worthy of $.99 !!!!!!

**People Look East -- this is our favorite, and have 3 versions of it-------Dellar Consort, Girls Choir of Bath, Three of Cups.
**O Come Divine Messiah - Passionist Sacred Music. Our second favorite!
**Of the Father's Love Begotten -- John Michael Talbot
**Creator of the Stars at Night - Choir of All Saints
**Comfort, Comfort, Ye My People --Choir of the Cathedral of St. Philip
**On Jordan's Bank - St. Edmundsbury
**The Cherry Tree Carol - Cambridge Singers
**Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent - Cambridge Singers

Music CDs:

I have a few CDs from Liturgical Press by the Schola Cantorum of St. Peter the Apostle in Chicago. I like their music very much.   All of their CDs are listed here.   Here is their Music for Advent II CD. Advent Music - OOP, which has a list of songs.    (And, I LOVE all their Christmas CDs!!!!! Lots of Eastern European carols....but I'm supposed to be talking about Advent music here )

There are some titles listed here: Advent Promise
Advent Music from Amazon
Some Midi Files
Suggestions for Advent/Christmas Music
Legends of St. Nicholas. Chants.
Advent Hymns from Women for Faith and Family and some more lyrics here at Churchyear.net

ARCHIVES:
Thread from the archives - Your Favorite Christmas Music
And, this one has some suggestions: Suggestions for Advent/Christmas Music

Suzanne pretty much covered my top eight. I also really like:

Lo, He Comes With Clouds Descending The tune on this site (Helmsley) is definitely my favorite.

Wake, Awake for Night is Flying

Oh, Suzanne--I know what you mean! A few years back, my hubby and I started working on a "best of the best" Christmas album, listening to just about every version of every Christmas song on Amazon and debating the merits of each one before deciding on the ones to buy. A labor of love, to be sure! And thanks to your list, I see we'll need to add a few more Advent hymns to the mix. Thanks for doing the work for us this time around!

Looking forward to listening to these and discovering some new favorites!

"Of the Father's Love Begotten" is my absolute FAVORITE, but I never thought about it being an Advent hymn before, I thought it was Christmas.

However, I'm perfectly willing to listen to it beforehand now that Suzanne has officially given me permission. If it made her list, I'm addin' it to mine

If anyone comes across "O Come O Come Emmanuel" version that is sung, I would love to hear it. My husband purchased the Christmas CD from Casting Crowns last year just because this song was listed, but it turns out that it was an instrumental version.

I downloaded one from iTunes last year. It was by WLP Choir and the album is Catholic Treasures:Classics for Feasts and Seasons.

God Bless,

I used Songr (click here to download and install) to search for songs with the lyrics; "O Come O Come Emmanuel" and I came across a couple great versions:

Gregorian - O Come, O Come Emmanuel
- Great to sing along with

Trisha Yearwood - O` Come O` Come Emmanuel
- Absolutely beautiful to listen to

Daniel Kury - O Come, O Come Emmanuel
- Grand instrumental version

God Bless You All!

Thanks to everyone for all of the great suggestions! I am breaking out of my anti-technology rut and learned how to use itunes this weekend.

Here is a list of Advent music that I found listed in the back of the St. Michael Hymnal (which is a very lovely hymnal put together at St. Boniface in Lafayette, IN)

Obviously there is a lot of overlap with what has already been listed, but there are a few extra ones as well. If anyone finds some particularly good recordings I am all ears!

Advent
Ábranse los Cielos
As Joseph Lay Uneasy
Behold a Virgin Bearing Him
Bless the Lord, My Soul
Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus
Dear Maker of the Starry Skies
Hail to the Lord’s Anointed
Hark! A Herald Voice is Calling
Hark! The Glad Sound
In the Lord
Lift Up Your Heads
Lo, He Comes with Clouds Descending
Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming / Es Ist ein Rose’ Entsprungen
O Come, Dvine Messiah
O Come, O Come, Emmanuel / O Ven!; O Ven! Emmanuel!
O Savior, Rend the Heavens Wide
On Jordan’s Bank
Our Soul Is Waiting
People, Look East
Prepare the Royal Highway
Rejoice, Rejoice, Believers
Rorate Caeli
Savior of the Nations, Come
The Advent of Our God
The Advenr of Our King
The Coming of Our God
The King Shall Come
Ven, Señor, No Tardes Más
Veni, Veni, Emmanuel
Wait for the Lord
Wake, O Wake and Sleep No Longer
Your Kingdom Come!

I like my Advent songs to have some pep to them. If you are fan of bagpipes and want the hear O Come Divine Messiah played with some Celtic flair, Bonnie Rideout has a lovely instrumental version on an album called The Celebration. It starts out with a few bars of Away in the Manger, but then quickly transitions to O Come Divine Messiah. This one and the Three of Cups version (both on iTunes) gets my kiddos hopping and bouncing!

Come Thou Redeemer of the Earth is more solemn, but written by St. Ambrose of Milan which would be fun to play on his feast day (Dec. 7th).

Come Thou Redeemer of the Earth

My girls sang this today at Mass with the children's choir, and we've been humming it all day! It was such a beautiful arrangement!!!

I looked on itunes for a version we liked, but found that they are all much slower than this morning....which was WONDERFUL! Anyone have a faster, peppy version to share?

I received the cd Legends of St. Nicholas: Medieval Chant & Polyphony in my shoes yesterday!

Anonymous 4 is my all time favorite musical group. They have specialized in early music, which means that they sing mostly Sacred Music with deep roots in the early Church, like Masses, Marian Hymns, Christmas, Music written by St. Hildagard and much more. Definitely worth checking out.

This was such a treat for me yesterday, and it fit so perfectly with our Advent Music theme!!!

Speaking of Advent, it reminded me that I have seen this new cd being promoted. It is being released in a few weeks and is getting good reviews on the Catholic blogs.

Advent at Ephesus or order directly from the sisters at Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles

Mary, this looks lovely. Do you know if there are any audio previews available for this CD (even for just one track?)?

And, their website is really neat....great pictures and "schedule" and video of their life. My girls had fun looking at that yesterday.

You know, Nancy, I was wondering the same thing and was surprised that neither Amazon (or B&N) or the sister's site had any audio tracks listed. Your inquiry got me to do a little digging and have finally found audio track listing at Ignatius Press.

Advent at Ephesus track listing with audio

The "Gabriel's Message" clip is beautiful!

I was eyeing this cd myself, and wanting to know its contents and listen to a few. Thanks, Mary!
