Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi There,

My three children have agreed to read Fellowship of the Rings in order to earn the privilege of watching the movies. My daughter would like to host a viewing of LOTR for her 14th birthday.

Now, though, there are so many editions of the LOTR movies. There's the extended edition. With Narnia, we really enjoyed the extended edition. But with LOTR, I've heard that there are scenes in the extended edition that would make it rater R. Is that true? Has anybody watched the extended editions?

I'd love to hear your suggestions and opinions. I've watched all the movies, but have yet to read the books. I'm hoping to be able to catch up and read the book before we watch the first movie.

I've never seen my children so motivated to read a book before! It's been great!

we have all the extended editions. our 13-yo watches *most* of the scenes. he also read the books, and our 18-yo has the movies memorized so she knows exactly what comes next and warns us if there's going to be a gory scene. so we watch as a family (including 10-yo and 7-yo who watch with pillows so they can cover their faces and ears completely if we tell them to). i don't watch everything either -- can't stand fight scenes. there are a few moments that would definitely rate an R with me.

oh, and we let our younger ones read the books as well. the books are awesome. you're going to love them!!!

We have the regular edition, but our friends have the extended edition. My dd has seen it (with their dd) and she cannot recall anything that would cause an R rating. In this country, it has a 12 rating if that helps any.

There is also a Trival Pursuit game for LOTR with a dvd that contains scenes from the movie as part of the questioning. Our dd received that as a gift for Christmas last year. Some of the answers to the questions can only be found in the extended version of the film.

Are the extra scenes included in the extended edition simply gory? Or does it involve sensuality, like between Arwen and Aragorn (excuse the spelling)?

Thanks for your help!

I have been the exact same, Laura. It's not my favorite genre to read though I LOVE the movies and the epic and the story. I hope I can get through it.

I'm still trying to figure out if the extended versions add sensuality to the original movie? That's what I've heard for the last one I think? I am thinking of purchasing the movies for my children for Christmas but would rather get the originals if there is added stuff other than gore (we use pillows too).

I don't know the movies that well.. I saw them all once pretty much.

I just wanted to mention that the movies will seem very dark compared to the books. They had to cut out so many threads of the story to streamline it to a movie. Perfectly understandable and expected mind you. But that means that the lighter sections of the books didn't get into the movie.

It will help greatly to have read the books because you'll know some of those side stories.

That said I did think they did a pretty good job making the books into movies.. definately a case of too much story for a reasonable length movie

i don't remember anything jumping out at me...but i only saw the short version once, and every other viewing has been extended, so i have no idea anymore what was "added" - if that makes sense.

and, to be honest, we are bothered a lot more by gore than by sensuality....

We're the complete opposite. There aren't any excessive love scenes between Arwen and Aragorn, I was so grateful for that when the movies came out, otherwise we would have been FF through them. The battles were awesome to watch and get my blood racing every time! I love to watch the clash between good and evil.

I will say the only goring part that ever bothered me was the beginning of Return of the King when Smegal (sp) kills his friend for the ring. I thought the romance between Arwen and Aragorn was tastefully done, surprising in the culture of today's Hollywood.
