Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

my soon-to-be-8-yo-dd finally outgrew her coat that she's been wearing 3 years, so i'm shopping for a new one.

she wants long (knee-length or longer)
more formal than casual (though she wouldn't mind down)
more traditional than modern

i, of course, would like something that's affordable. i've looked at wooden soldier and strasburg children.    at those prices i probably would just sew one except i can't find traditional patterns anymore either -- vogue used to have really pretty ones every year!

so.... suggestions?

thank you!

Too late to help you, Stef, but I wanted to suggest a couple non-OOP patterns for more traditional-looking girl's coats:

Simplicity 2876

Simplicity 2534

I know they're "Project Runway" and some of the examples on the pattern envelope look rather trendy, but the results can be very traditional depending on what fabric you use and pattern choices you make. I'm making a church coat from the first for my daughter right now and it's quite formal looking.

Mind you, I'm not suggesting that these patterns are well-written or easy to come together--unfortunately, they're neither! But they're cheap (I get mine for $1 during the JoAnn's sales) and easy to come by!
