Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are 'traveling' to Japan next week on our world geography and cultures tour. We have wonderful picture books and chapter books, arts and crafts and activities - but I am drawing a blank as to Japanese movies. We have watched at least one movie for each country we have visited and it gives the children such a great visual and background. Can any one recommend an appropriately rated movie suitable for children from preschool to 13?

I so want to find a movie which will contain so many of the wonderful elements of Japanese culture past and present - my boys will love anything Samurai and "honor" related, my dd and I the dolls and tea ceremonies.

Thank you so much.

Just to say that the only things I have so far are

Movie of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes - this is one of our favorite books (though makes me ) - we have read it several times but never watched the movie

The Little Travelers dvd - have not watched it yet (www.thelittletravelers.com)

I found Big Bird in Japan!!!

For children of that age I would recommend _My Neighbor Totoro_ [ Wiki on My_Neighbor_Totoro]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Neighbor_Totoro[/URL] or _Spirited Away_ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirited_Away by acclaimed director Hayao Miyazaki .

They are anime (Japanese term for animation) for children drawn in a fairly typical Japanese style filling much the same slot in Japan as the classical Disney movies do in the US (which may explain why Disney bought the license to dub and distribute them).

Actually I would recommend most movies by him   but those two are set in Japan with plenty of details of Japanese Japanese culture and the mysterious events are developed from Japanese folklore (Shinto) rather then western folklore.

If you had older teenage children I would recommend
this Japanese film influenced by the story of Macbeth Throne of Blood both because it was a memorable film to watch and because the subject matter gives us a good look at the differences between western and eastern culture. Unfortunately it is definitely not for children.

It's also worth noting that the original Godzilla (or Gojira) was Japanese.

Marilyn ,
If you PM me with your address I might be able to send you some trinkets from Japan since I live here.

God Bless,
Cheryl
(I'm in Okinawa Japan which is a little island south of mainland.)

Cheryl - the mail lady just came. I am speechless - your generosity makes me all tearful. I wish you could see my children's faces - it is like Christmas here.
