We found out today that DS aged 5 (almost 6 really) is going to need to have his damaged front top tooth removed. Has anyone gone through an extraction? Right now it hasn't occurred to him to ask how they will remove the tooth - I am assuming just pulling! But if it is a milk tooth it is designed to come out easily isn't it? We've talked about how St Appollonia will pray for him and how fun it will be  but I am not sure what I should be ready for!

Yes they just pull it.. but there isn't the longer roots.. and as long as you and the dentist are calm abotu it, often the kids are calm too. And they work it out.. as I teased my oldest (the worrier) the dentist isn't gonna pull his big plier for working on the car out of his hip pocket and put a foot on her chest and yank.  rather they just force it side to side in small increments until it can come out.
I give the ones that would worry and fuss Bach's rescue remedy and everyone arnica (homeopathic) to stop the bleeding faster and reduce any swelling from the trauma.

My dd had a tooth pulled a few months ago. Just a little local (which you might want to explain). It was quick and not too bad.

My kids are always really late in losing baby teeth, and their adult teeth are huge compared to the holes left by the baby teeth, necessitating much orthodontia. So my 9.5 yo has had 6 teeth pulled already (2 at once and 4 at another). He doesn't mind the extractions themselves but he really dislikes the locals, esp as he had to have them in all 4 quadrants last time!
See if your dentist will put the gel on the gums first that numbs just the surface, before injecting the Novocaine - our old dentist did that and made it much easier - you could hardly feel the injection.
Some dentists will also offer nitrous, which may help some kids if they aren't scared of the mask over their face.

My ds (now 8) had his front baby tooth removed a year and 1/2 ago- the only thing that hurt was the shot before the extraction. We described it like a pinch and he was a little nervous but knew what to expect and seemed to handle it well. The actual tooth extraction turned out to be more complicated than the dentist thought because the root on the tooth had not dissolved at all. Still didn't seem to bother my ds- just made it harder to pull. My son had trauma to his front two teeth when he was 2 and we think that's why there's an issue with this tooth- so, while most baby teeth DO come out easily, this tooth was harder to pull... BUT it still wasn't too traumatizing.

Thanks for the advice ladies. I am trying very hard to stay serene, and he is oblivious and actually excited, but once they have him in the chair, I am expecting fireworks. Thank the Lord, we finally had a LOVELY dentist come to our practise - the former one used to walk in, without speaking a word, start prising open the child's mouth! This one is so gentle, and child=friendly. Plus the nurse is a lapsed Catholic who we have been having great conversations with about the Church!

My daughter has baby teeth that do not want to come out, and the adult teeth are often coming in the gum line right behind. So, she's had three of her six baby teeth pulled. Daddy stayed with her every time, and the worst part was the shot. And she's a pretty big scaredy cat.
However, it helps that the tooth fairy brings extra if the dentist pulls the tooth.
Last time the dentist recommended an orthodontic consult because she doesn't have enough room for her permanent teeth on the bottom. I have a feeling that they're going to recommend pulling teeth that aren't even loose a smidgen yet.

I had not even considered the extra from the tooth fairy when we took ds in, and the dentist told him she always paid double for extracted teeth! Well, then i was stuck but luckily our tooth fairy has never been a huge tipper to begin with  Still, when your child has 4-5 pulled at a time, it could get expensive!

I second the nitrous! And the gel before the freezing medicine the Dentist injects! Go the whole route if he becomes scared! I wish I had given this advice to my nephews years ago! They ended up becoming afraid of their Dentist and started seeing a Pediatric Dentist after that!
