If you check in the prayers section, you can read dh Ed's update. Once his digestive tract can handle regular food again, he's going to need around 85 grams of protein a day. He's so protein-deficient from this month-long g.i. distress he's had that his serum protein is that of someone living in a refugee camp (those are the dietician's words.)
He'll be on a 1600 to 2000 calorie a day diet, and he's type II diabetic to boot. What are some high protein suggestions???? Today they gave him some glucerna at the hospital, but it is VILE tasting stuff and he doesn't want it. Surely I could make him a healthier and tastier smoothie at home. Any protein powder recommendations?
All experiences and suggestions welcome!

I need more protein in my diet during this pregnancy. My husband found Ensure that has a special "high protein" kind. I've been drinking one of those a day, at least. I don't know if that would help your husband but it's a suggestion!

I'll be back with protein powder recs later if no one else chimes in before me.
I have a couple recipes for really great high protein, low sugar cheesecake!!!!! I'll try to find it later....it's SO GOOD! And, wouldn't make you "waste calories" on other desserts, but I'm sure everyone would love it!

Here's a muffin recipe we enjoy that might fit the bill--I'm not experienced with a diabetic diet though.
Almond Flour Muffins
3 eggs
1/4 cup honey
2 1/2 cups almonds finely ground (this is your flour, we use a blender to grind them)
1/4 cup melted butter
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/8 tsp. salt
1) in mixer bowl combine eggs and honey, mix well
2) add remaining ingredients and blend until smooth (you may have to stop and scrape the sides of the bowl)
3) pour into 9 greased muffin tins
4) bake at 400 for about 16-17 minutes--do not overbake or the muffins will be very dry
Our muffin tins are all twelves, so we use the nine cups on the outside and fill the three in the middle with water while baking to keep the heat more even and keep the muffins moist while baking.
Praying you need not worry about the protein for too long and that dh recovers quickly!

I make spirulena smoothies for my boys; good protine and high minerals + cloraphyll! Their teeth are even looking whiter
And prayers for Ed continue.

I don't know much about diabetic recommendations, but here are some high protein suggestions of things I ate when I was pregnant with the twins.
Nuts
Eggs
Meats
Cheese
Yogurt
Beans (like bean burritos w/ cheese-quick, easy, cheap!)
Protein bars
avocados (good fats)
Nutribiotic rice protein powder can be ordered from vitacost.com and put in smoothies.

We use Whey Factors in smoothies. It's sugar free.
Cottage cheese packs quite a punch for protein - 14-16 gms per 1/2 cup. Ounce for ounce, turkey and chicken are higher in protein than beef. For breakfast I eat turkey bacon - 6gms of protein per strip.
You might want to check into some books by Kathleen Desmaisons. The books are about reducing/eliminating sugar and increasing protein.
