My dh went to the bank yesterday to deposit his paycheck. He took along four bills, including our mortgage payment, to mail them as soon as he left the bank. He accidentally left the bills sitting on the counter and only realized it on the drive home, by which time the bank had already closed. When he called this morning, there was no sign of the bills at the bank. We were told that it will cost $25.00 per check to put a stop payment on them...the suggestion from the bank was simply to wait until early next week to see if someone mailed the bills and whether the companies receive the payments. Anyone I've spoken with says there really isn't any way someone could cash the checks, since they're made out to specific companies... the sticky part is that someone could get ahold of our bank routing number and use it. I'm trying not to worry or panic, but we're dealing with a considerable amount of money that we can't possibly replace. By waiting this out we're also getting close to incurring a late fee for the mortgage...added to the stop payment fees that we mayt still have to pay could add up to over $150 that wasn't part of our already tight budget. Any ideas of what to do?

What about contacting the companies that the checks were for? find out if there's any way to pay them quickly if the checks don't show up on time before you get a fee. the fee, if there's one, for electronic payment can be cheaper than the fee for a late payment at least.
Did the bank have a janitor in last night? could you contact him/her and ask?

Another thought.. open a new account and so get new routing numbers and such.. and watch that one for anything unusual and to be sure the things that should go through do so.. but move the rest of the money into a new account and eventually close out the other just in case.. so at least you have a limited time of keeping a close watch on it.

Just a quick note - the checks CAN be cashed so watch out with your bank to see if they clear - I made an error and sent my doctor's check to the water company and the water one to the doctor. The doctor realized the error and called me to say he was sending back the check. The water company cashed the doctors check - apparently lots of it is done electronically now - banks are not checking
You have reminded me to follow up with my bank on this.
Prayers for you. I know how upsetting this must be for you.

I would stop payment immediately on the checks, even though it costs $$. The cost of stolen identity is much greater. I would close the bank account and open another one. I would notify the companies concerned about the situation and the stop payments, and would re-pay the bills out of the new account. This is the safest course of action; it would be nice if someone sent the bills, but in this world, it can be very expensive to wait around for that happy outcome. Better safe than sorry in this case!

I talked with our bank, again...they assured me that the best approach, for now, is to track our balance online, notify them if there are any transactions that we did not make, then simply wait until early next week to see if the companies the checks were made out to indeed receive the payments. On a good note, the bank assured me that we cannot be held responsible for any fraudulent charges made to our account...thanks be to God. I'm praying to St, Matthew, patron saint of bankers; St. Jude, patron of impossible causes; and St. Anthony of course, as patron of lost articles. My dh had the presence of mind to pray a Chaplet of Protection as soon as he realized the bills were missing, so we're hoping for heavenly protection over our meager earthly concerns. Thank you dear ladies for your input and prayers...I feel so much more at peace than I did earlier! Wouldn't life be so much simpler if we didn't have to worry about money?

Very good! I'll be praying for you here! It's so good to know you can't be held responsible...I didn't know that! Your dh certainly had presence of mind to pray...he must be a very wise man . (He married you, right? )
