I'm trying to decide between Brian Cleary and Ruth Heller's books as a fun but informative study of grammar.
I just wonder whether having a title such as Slide and Slurp, Scratch and Burb would appeal more to my boys than Ruth Heller's books which have lovelier pictures, and were received in a reasonably positive manner. What experience have you had?

I, personally, like Ruth Heller books better. The pictures are calmer and you can understand the point of the book better. That being said, your boys might like Cleary better as the pictures are more animated, comic-book like.
I'm not much help, am I?

Okay, so would you say the content matter of the Ruth Heller books is better? ie. Would a child understand grammar better once reading Ruth Heller's books compared to Brian Cleary's ?

I don't know that the Heller books content is "better." It is much more in depth, I think. The Cleary books are more of just an introduction to grammar concepts. I could see the Heller books being overwhelming for a little one if not taken slowly, while the Cleary books would be too lightweight for an older child.

I think the content/depth from low to higher is Cleary then Heller.
The overall presentation and clarity, I personally think Heller is better.
I found Cleary rather obnoxious, but many boys consider that a selling point!

Well I was planning on all the children studying grammar; 8-16yrs.
Although you are correct Martha, I'm sure my boys would see it as a selling point.

I know this is an old thread, but we checked out lots of Heller and Cleary books this year, mainly at the beginning of the school year. My oldest is 6, so I was thinking that most of it was over his head. He really loved them both, but got such a kick out of Cleary's books.
So fast forward to the end of the year, I started going through the guilt of "What have we covered, what have we learned". We're slowly getting through Sound Beginnings, and just talking about antonymns today. I started thinking we having covered synonymns or homonymns or any of that.
So when I started talking about antonymns, he started rattling off the answer, giving me all sorts of examples. I asked about synonymns -- and he knew examples about that, too.
"Where did you learn about this?" I asked.
"Words are CATegorical" books, Mom!"
Of course. All that "fun" reading he was doing he was learning. Score again for books!
What a nice Mother's Day gift for me.
