My oldest continually earns 100% on spelling papers (we are using Seton) however he cannot spell. It's obvious that he is memorizing for the test.

I'm dumping the spelling workbook for dictation and need guidance.

I just corrected his dictation work.

What is my next step? I plan to have him correct the errors, BUT I'm specifically wondering should I make up a spelling list from the words he misspelled or just have him correct them?

After refreshing my memory a bit with Charlotte Mason Companion, I see that I'm on the correct path and it's not necessary to use all the words he misspelled. We will focus on the frequently used words that I believe he should know.

Off to hunt for my other CM books.

I'd advoid spelling lists for a bit since he's learned to memorize for the test not for use.

I personally would check if visualization, sound or kinestics (copywork,actual or mental) would work best for study purposes. I   can not visualize in the normal sense of the word, (to extend a metaphor my mind's eye is legally bind) however I can bring tactile sensations to mind quite easily. Imagining tracing a word out on sandpaper would work better for me then making the futile attempt to visualize it.

Ack, I just had a whole post and it went POOF!   

We teach spelling (along with light grammar) through dictation. Before we moved to Spelling Wisdom last year we used Spelling Wisdom and liked that quite a bit too. I liked that there was immediate correction if the word was mispelled rather than memorization study for an end of the week test this only requires the study to work on the words that he mispelled and re-test on them until he has them down. With Spelling Power there was a built in process at the end of each lesson for the child to work on.

Having said that, when I asked the kids which they would prefer to use this year, they all said Spelling Wisdom - dictation.

I also like how Melissa explains it in her two posts at In the Sparrow's Nest, although our lessons do not laast as long as hers. If your new to dictation make sure to start with shorter selections and work your way up.

BTW this topic has resparked my desire to actually do dictation more frequently so I am thankful for the question.

It also reminded me to remember that my children need not share my limitations.

[I gave myself a headache trying yet again to visualize simple shapes How do you see what's not there? Particularly colour? If I shut my eyes all I see is what's behind my eyelids. And then I remind myself not everyone can bring to feel the fire-warmed fur of a cat whenever they want to or there would be better words for it in english.]
