I just wanted to post this great and cheap resource for early nature study. This book is OOP, but is available for as little as $0.02 at Amazon. It covers many different backyard animals such as grasshoppers, caterpilars, bees, ladybugs, snails, lizards, salamandes, worms, ants, even flies! In addition, there are sections on larger animals and indoor nature projects such as setting up cages and aquariums, cats, dogs, rabbits, canaries, mice, hamsters. Chickens, wasps and birds nests are also covered. It also has sections on rain, wind, soil sand, rocks, and a variety of plants (trees, flowers, dandelions, moss, lawns).
For each topic, the author provides:
1. A basic summary of information
2. Where to find it
3. How to care for it (if it's an animal)
4. A list of activities for observing and interacting with the item
5. A list of needed materials
6. A list of vocabulary words
This is a book we have found ourselves coming back to many times over the years. It is easy to use and a perfect introduction for the early students to nature study. The amount of information is just right, too, for beginning naturalists-not too much, but not too scanty, either.
I should add that it is written to the teacher, so there are not really any illustrations.
