Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My mature dd has sugar cravings the likes of which dumbfound me. Yet...now that I think of it...I have this dim memory of eating only Peppermint Patties for lunch at her age for weeks on end. Oh then for variety I would switch to glazed donouts. Oooooooo, there were the Heath bars and the chocolate covered ice cream bars. Yikes! Just when I'd blocked this stuff out of my memory, it's back!

Any words of wisdom? Substitute healthier sweets for less healthy sweets? Vitamin deficiency? Wait it out? Hormone connections?

Love,

They say that chocolate cravings can indicate a magnesium deficiency. That just about sums up the extent of my knowledge on this subject.

I'll be following the thread with interest, though, since my almost 13yo son has developed quite a sweet tooth. He has grown two inches in two months so I am pretty sure for him it is mostly a giant craving for easily accessible carbs. He is always hungry!   He's always asking me to bake gingersnaps for him!

But I know it's important to learn good eating habits in the teenage years (my sad experience is quite similar to yours, Angie) so I'm interested in this topic.

I have sugar cravings. These things help:

Eat juicy fruit (grapes, oranges, watermelon, etc) when it hits.

Eat whole grains as much as possible. White flour only makes the cravings worse.

Eat some fat with each meal/snack. Eating lowfat all the time can leave you feeling hungry even when you are full. For instance, a higher fat yogurt will satisfy more than a nonfat one.

When you are going to eat sugar, its better that it be something with protein in it than not (for instance, ice cream is a better choice than a cookie).

Also, chromium picolinate can help with killing sugar cravings. I'm not sure about the dosage for a teen, but a 100mcg tablet once a day for an adult for 30 days usually does it. Then you can stop taking it.

I've started using Stevia to sweeten iced tea to get rid of the sugary drinks habit (I love soda...I got the addiction in my 3rd pregnancy when I was sooooo nauseous and only a real coke would help). I got it at Trader Joes. Its not a chemical like Nutrasweet or Splenda. Its an herb and it works well.

I am working with an alternative medicine doc (came recommended from nurses and is helping me so I don't think he is a total quack). He commented that people that tend to drink sodas all day, or are always grabbing sweets may be suffering from low blood sugar - the person feels especially tired, needs energy, grabs for quick energy (in the form of sugar) and then crashes and needs more. My body reacts especially to transfats (in a lot of chocalate and processed foods) and I need a lot of protein to sustain my energy levels. If I don't get enough, I become sweet addicted - mostly because these are foods requiring little/no prep time and give quick energy. Instead, having quick protein sources helps and keeping the house mostly sugar free. The energy level thing can also be related to additional stress (especially a stress on the Adrenal glands) and low thyroid.

Anyways I try to eat a lot of protein, frequently throughout the day. Snack on things like walnuts. I cannot have sodas - and definitely avoid the fake sugars. I try to avoid sugars - the easiest way is to keep them out of the house. The doc had me on a really strict diet for 3 weeks (I could not have lived with it forever but could deal with 3 weeks) while taking some homeopathic remedies. Also making sure to get the omega 3 and 6 fats helps.

Oh, a lot of teens need a lot more rest again like dc need when they are very little. Lack of rest can put extreme stress on the Adrenals which impacts the other endocrine glands (like the regulation of blood sugar, the thyroid and the hormone balance).
