It's about time I made a timeline! Would you like to share how you have gone about this? What worked, what didn't. Perhaps you have a link to your blog as I can see your efforts. I'm a bit of a slacker, and rather challenged in the creativity department, so simple is best perhaps.
Thanks,
Tricia.

We just use a 3 ring binder with tabbed dividers and page protectors. I haven't found a long enough wall for a timeline!

I have a few pictures on my blog. You have to scroll all the way down on this entry.
Our timeline
I have hung string on the top of one wall in our school room and use paperclips to hold on an index card for each "entry" on the timeline. I have a friend who uses the small colored clothes pins (tiny ones) and I'd like to get some of those instead of the paperclips soon.

I use an entire wall in one room. I bought 4 colors of masking tape (in a pack) from Lakeshore Learning. Then, I used a different color tape (the tape is the line, of course) for Ancients, Medieval, Renaissance and Modern.
I used white masking tape and a Sharpie to place the dates.
With the wall space I was working with I measured 16" between each 25 years. It was important for me to "see" a standard time frame.
Then I purchased 3"x 2" colored index cards (also from Lakeshore) and made a "key" of one color for each Continent. I also wanted to easily "see" where things were happening.
Now we grab the right color card and draw a small picture and add names and dates and tape it on the wall.
It took a couple hours to get the tape and dates up but it was worth it.

I created our timeline as a bound book.

That is a fantastic time line idea! I've been wanting to do a timeline for ages but nothing I've tried has worked out. I think this one might actually work!

We did poster board (8 1/2 X 11 sheets) taped together fan fold style. Be careful with the tape so that you do it on what will be the back side. The advantage is that you can fan fold it and tuck it into a binder, you can unfurl in a century or period of history at a time and if you so desire, you can unfurl the whole thing across the floor if you want to see the scope at once.
The disadvantage is that there isn't as much space for colorful pictures and such unless they are tiny - so we combined the fan fold with some sort of wall timeline or timeline notebook for the drawings and colorful visuals.
Oh, in ancient civilization study, we did color code countries because I was having so much trouble keeping straight who conquered whom, when and which of those civilizations were totally swallowed up and which simply existed for a time as a province of some other larger country only to rise again either with its own name or a new one or in combination with some other civilizations. I used colors of the main countries from ABC of Christian culture - but then came up with our own for some of the other smaller countries that got swallowed up and disappeared.
I also tried to remember to do American history above the center line and European/world history below the line - not that it matters which goes on top, just that we could glance back and forth easily and things weren't scattered at random.
I am artistically and aesthetically challenged so mine all come out crowded and detailed but the act of creating them was great. Next time I will enlist my more talented children for aesthetic recommendations. They are doing wonders to help me beautify our living space - teaching me rudimentaries.

We started ours during the summer...I wanted to start one for years but I was all hung up on the logistics of it and couldnt' figure out what I wanted to do. In the end, I bought some blank time-line pieces to wrap around the walls in our school room. Then, for the "skeleton" of our timeline, we have been using the review cards in the Story of the World activity books. They are small, index card sized, and just right for arranging around the timeline. Then we are making our own cards for Saints and church history related stuff as we come across different events and people. Eventually, after we get all the cards up, I'd like to add some nicer illustrations and pictures too, maybe from Dover coloring books and such. Now if I can just figure out how to make those cards stick to the wall and timeline! I used poster strips for the timeline pieces, and that worked well, but they aren't cheap and I can't use them for each of the timeline cards. We used masking tape, but many of them keep falling off...really irritating!

Could you put up hooks in each corner of the room, string fishing line around the room and attach the cards with pegs?

Thanks for all the ideas.
Janet, I really like your idea. Pity I can't see it. I've always wished you had a blog.
We have a rather small house, so even though I love the wall idea (esp. with the SoTW cards!) it's not really an option atm.
Erin, I've always loved your timeline book, but do you find that having it bound means that you can't fix mistakes?
Tricia.

Tricia
Is this where I be really honest and admit we don't use it much?
Not I believe because the nature of the book but the nature of the students
