Okay, I know its early to be talking about this, but if someone has a great plan. . .I would like to know ahead of time so I can actually do it. . .instead of my same ole "maybe next year. . ."
What do you do for St. Valentines Day?
Commercial or homemade valentines?
Any good books?
Any ideas?
I rarely feel that my kids are missing much in their life outside institutional school, BUT I loved receiving that bag of valentines at school and passing them out and I miss that for my kids.
A couple of times here we had a hs exchange at our Feb. get-together, which doesn't meet anymore.
So, this year the kids won't receive from an outside source other than their parents, and each other. . .and you know, maybe that's okay, because we truly love them the most anyway!

Hi Sarah,
What if you have your children make Valentine's and then go deliver them to a nursing home? They could play the role of St. Valentine...
We've done this with our Little Flowers group the last two years but this year we're not doing Little Flowers. We live near 3 retirement homes and 1 Alzheimer's facility. I might ask a couple of other families to do this with us...
Just an idea...

Make homemade Valentines for each other, then hide them throughout the house for each of the kids to find. Another idea.....paste Valentines on a large sheet of paper and laminate over them. Then cut the page up into puzzle pieces for a Valentine puzzle !!!

I'd like to have my girls make Valentine's Day Cards for one another. I like the idea of hiding the cards around the house like a treasure hunt. Then we could study the verse "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Luke 12:34
I'm thinking of doing some of these activities for St.Valentine's Day.

Sarah --
you might want to try and get a copy of Saint Valentine -- it's a great story of the real St. Valentine and how his name is linked to the "love day". The illustrations look like Roman mosaics and are really cool -- we did mosaic valentines for the family last year after reading this book. [As well as a chocolate heart cake, of course ]
Have fun.

Sarah,
One year, one of the most creative homeschool moms in my neighborhood made us a plate of beautiful heart-shaped cookies with lovely sprinkles and a homemade valentines. My children were so thrilled by the surprise. Even if your kids don't get that great big bag, can you make a short list of people who might appreciate a thoughtfully planned suprise?

Thank you for this book suggestion Mary. We are in a mini-coop with three families and our theme through February is Rome. This book will tie in perfectly, especially because the kids will be making mosaics!

Last year we made homemade cards and decorations. We read a Tomie de Paola Valentine's Day book of things to make and do. We made the mail bag in that book to collect the cards. It came out cute. I think we made a dessert from it too. Then we had one friend of mine and her son over for a party. The kids exchanged cards and danced and played together.
I think the year before we read a St. Valentine book that was already suggested, and we had a Valentine lunch with strawberry milk and heart shaped sandwiches made with strawberry cream cheese and cucumbers. Sometimes we make pink heart shaped cookies with the Pampered Chef cookie press.

Hi Sarah,
Legend has it that birds choose their mates on St. Valentine's Day, so it might be fun to make "valentines" for the birds in your backyard. The kids can make homemade treats to hang in the trees like bagels with pb and seeds etc.
An activity I plan to do at our little coop's party this year is to make felt hearts. I have some pink, red and lavender felt that I will cut out in advance in heart shapes (the older kids can do this themselves). Place one heart on top of the other and stitch closed with pretty emroidery floss. Before closing up, stuff with sheep's wool and add a few sprinkles of dried lavender or other sweet herb. Some might embroider a little on the front or back of the heart if they desire.
The felt heart idea came from a wonderful book called Earthways: Simple Environmental Activities for Young Children. Lots of nice easy seasonal crafts.
Another craft I might try from Earthways is "Growing Your Own Valentine." You cut pink cellulose sponges into heart shapes and sprinkle them with a quick-germinating grass seed. Place them in a sunny window and keep them moist till they sprout.
You can also make a Jenny Wren Post box -- decorate a shoe box or other similar sized box and place it somewhere in your home. The children can pop their Valentines, little notes and other "mail" into it for family and friends to find.
Sorry to go on! I just love Valentines Day !

Our family just loves Valentines Day. My dd and ds have invited two homeschooling families over which totals six kids. My dd is studying for fun, Victorian's time Valentines Day celebration along with Reading about St. Valentine. We just went to our local library and chose books on the subject. We then ordered a few items from www.hearthsong.com for victorian valetines kit,and baking products. It came with instructions and materials for quite a few Victorian Valentines. We are then, for the party, asking the guest to wear their fancy party clothes, playing some traditional games, having a tea party and exchanging homemade valetines. We are trying to make everything ourselves. The kiddies think its traditional and I know its for econmics and not buying into consumerism.

Women for Faith and Family have two pages for February 14. It is the feast of Sts. Cyril and Methodius, but they also have lovely ideas for Saint Valentine's Day.

Just found this wonderful Spirtual Bouquet for St. Valentine's day. It could be delivered with some candy or flowers or sent very easily through the mail to grandparents.
