Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've been searching, my pastor is looking into this question and I thought I'd post here as well to see if anyone here can answer my 16yo dd question.

In her studies of the Faith we have consistently used the BC, it has served us well. Our dear parish priest gave my teens a copy of the new Compendium as a gift and in her studies she discovered that there are only 5 Precepts of the Church listed in the Compendium instead of 6??? The Compendium completely dropped the Precept of the Church "Observe the laws of the Church concerning marriage." Can anyone explain to me why this is? Father told her to stick to 6 while he looks into it, he can't imagine why that was omitted.

In addition, there is an "extra" beatitude, the Compendium added a ninth Beatitude instead of the original 8?

Thanks for any help or info you can provide. My dd would love to beat Father to the answer!

I think that there are only 5 Precepts:

1. You shall attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation and rest from servile labor

2. You shall confess your sins at least once a year

3. You shall receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easter season

4. You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church

5. You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church

Those are taken right from the CCC - 2041 to 2043.

Variation on the number of precepts (commandments) of the Church

From an article by Archbishop Buechlein:

The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church, first published in 1958, had this entry under “Commandments of the Church” (also Precepts of the Church). “Certain moral and ecclesiastical precepts, imposed by the RC Church on all her members. They were tabulated in the Middle Ages, and later more strictly classified. Thus St. Peter Canisius in his Summa Doctrinae Christianae (1555) mentions five and St. Robert Bellarmine in his Doctrina Christiana (1589) lists six, though the catechism Ad Parochos, published by order of the Council of Trent in 1566, does not speak of them.”

In one form or another, the “Precepts of the Church” have been promulgated as requirements of its members. The Catechism of the Catholic Church, promulgated in 1992, is normative for our day. After researching the history of the precepts, the Catechism of the Catholic Church lists the five, which I have noted above.

Catholic Encyclopedia(1917) indicates that there has been some variation of number of precepts throughout the Church history - often associated with different countries. It states specificially - "The Church in her supreme authority has defined nothing regarding the form and number of the Commandments of the Church."

It's clear that the Church has not dropped the requirement of observing the laws of the Church in regards to marriage. It has to do with the moral code and living sacramentally and treatment of it given in other sections of the Catechism.

Variation on the number of Beatitudes
Just seems to be a variation in how one numbers what is listed in Matthew 5, where there are nine statements. Lukes gospel only lists 4 in a positive statement and 4 worded as negative (woe to...). I couldn't find a specific statment about the "change" between the 2 catechisms in number but it seems to just be related to how one chooses to number and include what is in scripture. The CCC lists seperately all the statements found in the Luke version. I think because verse 10 and verse 11 are similar - refer to those persecuted - the BC just stated them as one beatitude.

This is helpful. Interesting the BC and Seton's Confirmation prep book list 6 Precepts.
