We are going through the catechism along with Jennifer's Angel Food book suggestions (Thanks again, Jennifer!) and I was wondering about a notebook. Does anyone have the children write or draw anything in a notebook? I was thinking it might be a helpful resource for remembering what they are learning. If you do, could you please explain what it is they are doing? -Thanks, Barb

My oldest dd is doing a Confirmation notebook (we are using the Confirmation Prep book from Seton). She reads a section, copies down the information, writes a personal reflection, and then decorates the page. It's turning into a lovely keepsake.
We prefer these for our notebooks.

We did a FHC notebook and will do a Confirmation notebook. I'm thinking about a First Confession notebook this year, also.

We have a First Penance"section" in our First Holy Communion Notebooks. Here are some ideas:
1.Original Sin – narration/illustration from First Communion Baltimore Catechism Chapter.
2.The 10 commandments (re-state in own words) The Ten Commandments, Lovasik book. Illustrate some.
3.The Prodigal Son, Luke 15:11-24. narr/illus
4.Zacchaeus, Luke 19:1-10. narr/illus
5.The Vine and the Branches, John 15:1,4,5. narr/illus
6.The Lost Coin. narr/illus
7.The Lost Sheep, Luke 15:1-7. narr/illus
8.Scriptural Roots of of Confessing Sins, John 20:19-23
9.How to make a good confession (cut apart and paste them in order, with own definition of the steps) Lovasik book, pg. 22
10.To receive the Sacrament of Penance worthily, I must…..(cut apart and paste) Lovasik book
11.The Act of Contrition – memorize, copy work, decorate
12.Make a Confession Folder (exam-conscience, notecards, bible verses, holy cards, act-contrition, steps to a good confession, other prayers)
13.Narration of First Penance
14.Make copy of Examen of Conscience for Children – cut and paste, decorate
15.Read, narrate, illustrate....The Butterfly That Found Her Way HomeLademan/Brindle
16. Read and copywork of titles of corresponding Angel Food for Boys and Girls stories from list.
17. Page of St. John Vianney...focusing on his role as confessor...how many hours he spent hearing confessions. Coloring page or illustration of him.
18. Take pictures of all-things-having-to-do with Confession....the actual confessional, light above the door, prayer cards, crucifix, priest, stole, etc.
19. Copywork of before/after Confession prayer
20. Copywork of Prayer to the Holy Spirit before making exam-conscience.
21. Bible verses having to do with forgiveness...copywork
22. Pages 139-145 Baltimore Cat. #1

We are using the Baltimore Catechism and although the boys know the answers when I ask the questions, I think as we go on to each new section it would be good to have something written in a notebook. They don't like to write too much (and it isn't very pretty!) so I was thinking of printing out the questions and answers for the week and maybe have them illustrate the page or something. I will be putting these in a catechism notebook with prayers and things a Catholic should know like sacraments, stations of the cross, holy days, etc. So I would like it to be more scrapbook looking as a keepsake than just regular school work.
Has anyone done something like this and do you have photos? If you have children who don't want to write (or it doesn't look good when they do) how have you made it their own, instead of just something printed out? All four of my boys have been reluctant with hand writing anything and after years of handwriting workbooks, it is still tortuous for them and I just want to print anything that is long and find a way to have them make it their own by illustrations or decorations or something else. I would really like to hear what you have done or even better, see pictures.

I don't have any pictures to share, but I did have dd10 do copywork or dictation. She illustrated alot of her pages. I think printing pages out and having them illustrate those pages would be fine. The important thing about doing the notebook is that they are learning! Encourage them to add a title to the page, or every few pages write one sentence about what they are learning. If they really hate handwriting, let them type!

I did this a lot with my first daughter's FHC notebook....she was a bit younger, didn't enjoy writing, and it would've been painful....yet she was ready for the material and really loved compiling all she was learning in a notebook. I would print things out, then she cut around "it" , put things in order, cut and paste, decorate, draw, borders, stencils, stickers, stamping, painting....however she wanted to decorate the page.
Same thing with the narrations ....print them out and then they cut them out and put them on the page and decorate....if illustrating on the bottom/top of the other half isn't really what they want to do at the moment, then just decorating the page is fun too!
ie: for "how to make a good confession"....instead of copywork, I printed out the "steps" with a separate 1-2-3-4-5, and then they cut them out and matched it to the number, and glued them in order on a colored piece of paper, and then she made a border with a few stickers.
The only thing to be careful of is putting "too much" on one page (ie: all 14 stations just "listed" on a page).....then it becomes just like a page in a book. You want to talk about 1 or 2 things, savor it, decorate, illustrate, etc.....so it "becomes their own" in the process. You don't just want a long list of things on a page....unless it's copywork on a page that is done over a long period of time, kwim?
