OK, I don't know what it is this year ... we've tried a couple of different read-alouds (Education of Little Tree, Incident at Hawk's Hill, 39 Clues -- which Thomas loves but Maggie and JP can't stand!, and others). I so need a great, gripping, exciting read-aloud for my kids ... Thomas won't be listening (yeah, right!  ) so I just need one that Maggie (9) and JP (almost 7) will enjoy ...
They tend to like family-oriented stories, maybe some nature thrown in, or a bit of fantasy ....
I know I'm being vague here ... but what would you try?

It's hard to know what you've already read...and my bet is that most of the ones I'm about to list have definitely been done...but here goes:
** If you're looking for history read alouds, Landmark and Signature series books are great for read alouds.
** EB White is great for a read aloud
** James Herriot's Treasury for Children
** Mary Fabyan Windeatt books
** Hilda Van Stockum books - The Bantry Bay series, the Mitchells series
** Marguerite Henry books
** Big Red and other Jim Kjelgard books
For nature related read alouds...we're really enjoying:
** Clara Dillingham Pierson's Among the (Meadow, Forest, Pond, Night, Farmyard) People
** The Stories Mother Nature Told Her Children by Jane Andrews
** The Story Book of Science by Jean Henri Fabre - this is what we're reading right now and the kids love it. It's written from the perspective of Uncle Paul who is telling stories to his nephews and niece - Emile, Jules, and Clare.
For some great ideas, Mary, you might check out Yesterdays Classics.
Good luck...there's always the millionth re-reading of Narnia.

Have you read The Mysterious Benedict Society. My kids love this book. The third one is due out soon and they can't wait.

My kids liked this one, too.
We read Summer of the Monkey by Wilson Rawls this summer (for the 3rd time - but this time for my youngest who can't remember the other times we read it.) It is a HOOT - very funny and in the end very moving. My 9-year-old said it was the funniest book he ever read/heard.
Or how about something short and simple like Half Magic

Our most successful read alouds of all time (in no particular order):
The Hobbit
Beatrix Potter complete Tales
Winnie the Pooh (all of them)
Pagoo
Paddle to the Sea
Little House books
David Macaulay books (esp Ship,City,and Cathedral)
A Samurai's Tale
A Child's History of the World (Hillyer)
Ramona books
Ginger Pye
The Princess Bride
Jungle Book
None of these are ones I'd consider gripping or exciting, however (except maybe The Hobbit, Princess Bride, and Jungle Book). They are the ones that bring back extra-sweet memories and that inspired lots of rabbit trails.

We are reading Gone Away Lake and Return to Gone Away by Elizabeth Enright we love her books. The series she wrote about the Melendy kids are great too. Oh and Gone Away is on Audible if you want to all listen!! 
Also Elizabeth Gouge was a favourite earlier in the year...her children's books: Henrietta's House, The Linnets(wonderful,wonderful book!),Smokey House etc.

I will put a third in for The Mysterious Benedict Society. We read the first two books this summer and they were a huge hit with all three of my kids.
Some other ones that we loved this summer was The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke and The BFG by Roald Dahl.
I just bought Kate DiCamillo's (Tale of Desperaux) new book, entitled The Magician's Elephant. We started it today so I am not sure if it is good but it is by Kate DiCamillo so I think it has to be good.

I bet you have done Bridge to Terabithia? I probably spelled it wrong. Clementine by Pennybacker is hilarious so it is exciting in just hearing her next silliness.

Ginger Pye is my absolute all time favorite read-aloud. 
In fact, we're reading through it again right now. The only problem is I get to laughing so incredibly hard that I have to stop reading! Oh, I just love that book.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions ... keep 'em coming!
I'm compiling a list and will post in a few days so that others can see the great suggestions. We've read many of the ones you've mentioned but I'm sure someone hasn't, so don't worry about that!
I do have to say that we read The Benedict Society one and didn't like it ...  ... I couldn't figure out who the author was writing the book for? But, now Penderwicks, wow that was a hit! And the Enright books are great.
Any other suggestions ....
