I am looking at this for my 6th grader, 4 graders and 1st grader. One catalog that I was reading suggested starting all the kids at level 1 regardless of their current ability. Anyone do this? Is it the best way to do it? Timberdoodle has placement tests, but also says an older kid can start off at a lower level.
Thanks.

because they're word families it can work.. but what I found was that my older kids write so much faster than the younger ones that it was very tedious waiting on the younger ones.. I think this year I'll do the older 2 together and then the next 2 together.. so that we can do less words per day for the younger ones.

My older one is actually the slowest writer, so that may not be a problem.
To be clear, I would need one book and then a student response book (or just paper) for each student?
Thanks.

just paper works fine.. I've been using those 10-15 cent spiral notebooks from walmart for the kids (each with a different color ).. just turn to a new page each day.
