Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone know a GREAT read-aloud, living lit book with an astronomy theme? Maybe about a kid that gets fascinated with the stars or planets ... a book like Burgess writes, but about stars/planets ... or a book like Porter-Stratton but about stars ... or like Sterling North but about planets?

Anyone?

I am sure you have probably already looked in these places, but just some ideas...

Simply Charlotte Mason.com recommends Carry On, Mr. Bowditch. My favorite resource is MacBeth's Astronomy Opinion

Exploring the Sky: Projects for Beginning Astronomy also looks promising.

We haven't come across any like what you are looking for since we haven't studied astronomy yet, but I hope these help with some ideas.

Has anyone ever seen this? I can't tell if it would just have picture books or if novels might be included. I may have to request it through ILL.

If you use the *search inside this book* function at the amazon.com site you can see some of the books recommended within the book complete with short notes.

At first glance there are alot of myth and folklore, many non-fiction books and a handful of storybooks, at least one novel, most books appear to be illustrated.

A very interesting introductory book on the solar system for Jr. High and older would be The Planets by Dava Sobel. It's a bit of a fun grab bag pondering the solar system and what it has inspired in us which would make it a good starter for Rabbit trails.

My only real beef with the book is that it really needs pictures! She spends so much time describing the planets and I'm so bad at visualization.

Fortunately it's not that hard to find books with beautiful pictures of the solar system to go along with this one.
