Any experience - positive or negative?
I love the way it looks and have it everywhere else (except the bathrooms), but I'm not sure whether it would really hold up in a high traffic/heavy use kitchen.

Our house has it, not put in by us. It's fine, wearing just as well as the rest of the house. I think I'd probably put an extra coat of poly on if I could.
ETA: we use an area rug in front of the sink/dishwaser as well.

We're renting a house with hardwood floors in the kitchen. The house is fifteen years old, and the floors are showing slight warping from water damage around the sink and dishwasher areas, as well as in a corner of the kitchen where I think the previous owners might have kept a wine bottle cooler. Earlier this year, we had a bit of trouble with out fridge leaking, and I was so worried that it would cause further damage.

We had wood floors in the last house. Loved it. We did have a dishwasher leak and had to replace the boards in some sections. And I kept area rugs in front of the sink, stove, and fridge to keep dents and spills at a minimum. But I really enjoyed having them and would do it again in a minute.

I had hardwoods in the kitchen of our last house. I wouldn't do it again. The floor got dinged from cans being dropped,and there was always the concern of water damage.

Kitchen hardwood seems fine so far. You probably want something with a good finish - not all hardwoods are finished the same way, but I'm sure the flooring store can tell you which is best. We have smallish area rugs in front of the sink and dishwasher, fwiw.

We have it now and are also building a new home that will have it installed as well. I really like it, just keep area rugs in certain places. What's the alternative? Vinyl will also dent and you can't refinish it, ceramic tile could also crack when something heavy falls on it. I know an interior decorator who always tells his clients not to get ceramic for floors because they easily crack (even the better ones)and are hard on your feet/joints.

We've thought about cork. But I really like dark hickory.
I found some dark hickory plank look vinyl flooring. Since the way our house/flooring is laid out, we may very well go with that vs hardwood in the kitchen and dining areas (we would eventually like to put in hardwoods through the rest of the house).

We have maple in our 100-year old house. I don't like having a table & chairs on it b/c the floor gets dirty, lots of little kids push chairs around to 'help' at the sink, counter, & stove and the floor gets scratched up badly. I loved it at first and will love it again once it's refinished and we have an island w/ barstools on a runner...someday.

We put hardwood in the kitchen, dining, and breakfast nook about 8 years ago. It was a great choice. I agree with Nina about the alternatives.
