I was wondering whether any of you have experience with enrolling your child in a lab class such as chem or biology in a public school. Can anyone share with me what you had to do to get "in"?

Right now we're trying to get my 9th grader into football at the Junior High level and I'm finding I have to jump through all sorts of hoops. What's going to happen when he's ready to take chem if I desire to put him in a high school class?? Yikes!

my daughter took Chem at the local ps. to get in...well, we just went to the office and signed her up.

it might be harder with sports due to liability issues?

i should add - it wasn't that much different than her 100-level Chem and Geology classes at Community College. Next time, we will probably just skip the hs classes and utilize community college sooner.

You know, every school is different, and every child is different, so its hard to make a blanket statement like "Your kid will be fine and learn a lot!" or "Your kid will have a lazy teacher and fall in with a bad crowd from being exposed to those kid of kids!" Even community colleges aren't uniformly good for homeschooled kids, especially if they are on the younger end of the spectrum. Some community colleges can expose a child to FAR more immorality than just a typical public high school. It all just depends.

Some school districts and school sites make you jump through hoops to enroll in classes or athletics. Some don't. Some community colleges are great. Some aren't.

I guess what I'm trying to say, Tina, is, look at your options- look at your own child- look at the high school and/or college- and make that decision on a case by case basis. Ask other homeschoolers in your area, they'll have the best advice on particular schools and classes. No one else has the grasp of the situation that you have.

I've homeschooled now in 2 different states and neither of the local school districts allowed ANY classes or sports to be taken at the ps. So, frankly, a few hoops to jump through wouldn't surprise me at all!

I'm planning on ds taking chemistry next year (his senior year) at the local cc. I did biology last year with him and we're doing human anatomy, health and forensics this year, and he'll have dual enrollment next year. I can teach chemistry but I just despise it and I know I would not put 100% into it (After 7 college chemistry courses I promised myself I would never take another).
