Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Dear Friends, we wanted to share with you that tomorrow, Tuesday August the 4th, the Feastday of St. John Vianney, the Pope has decreed a Plenary Indulgence:):)

The conditions are:

*go to Confession
*to attend Mass (and offer prayers to Jesus the Eternal Priest for all priests)
*receive Holy Communion
*and pray for the Pope's Intentions

(Thanks to our friend, Fr. Michael Wunder who told us about this exceptional gift:)

One also must be detached from all sin --even venial sin.

"If the work can gain a plenary indulgence - full remission - but we are not perfectly disposed, it can still gain a partial indulgence. We must be properly disposed in order to gain a plenary indulgence. This means that we must be in the state of grace and we must be completely detached even from the affection for any sins. That is difficult, but that is the disposition necessary for a plenary indulgence. If we have some affection for some sins we can nevertheless gain a partial indulgence by performing the same works to which the indulgence is attached. (Fr. John Zuhlsdorf)

Also, “Detachment from sin, even the most venial”, one of the requirements for a plenary indulgence, is NOT a requirement to be free of concupiscence (you can't be). To fulfill this obligation just make an act of the will in which you detest all sin and desire only attachment to God. That should be sufficient, as long as you are in a state of grace when you make it.

Also, you must receive sacramental confession within TWENTY (20) days before or after the indulgenced act. It used to be 8 days, but that was extended for the Jubilee year and the extension was never revoked.

Eucharistic reception, preferably on the day of the action, but it’s acceptable to receive Him on a different day if necessary. Prayers for the Pope’s intentions (you don’t have to know what those intentions are --though they are posted online in many places-- as long as you are praying for their success).

God bless!

Since you can receive confession and communion on a different day, could you go say this Saturday, which is his feast day on the Traditional calendar? Wondering because I am more likely to make a Saturday Mass/confession than a Tuesday. The drive is far.

Nique, Thanks for posting a reminder. I had forgotten about this!

Michele, I didn't know about the 20 days!

I've never heard about defering receiving communion before, either.

Honestly I don't know what constitutes "necessity" I think you'd have to ask a priest who would know (like Fr. Z who I always find helpful on such matters).

I was rereading the official decree, which Vultus Christi posted.

The indulgenced act is going to Mass on the feast of St. John Vianney and pray or do a good work for priests of the Church. So it would seem you would have to go to Mass today. Am I reading that incorrectly?

Quote:
(B) All truly penitent Christian faithful who, in church or oratory, devotedly attend Holy Mass and offer prayers to Jesus Christ, supreme and eternal Priest, for the priests of the Church, or perform any good work to sanctify and mould them to His Heart, are granted Plenary Indulgence, on the condition that they have expiated their sins through Sacramental Confession and prayed in accordance with the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff. This may be done on the opening and closing days of the Year of Priests, on the 150th anniversary of the death of St. Jean Marie Vianney, on the first Thursday of the month, or on any other day established by the ordinaries of particular places for the good of the faithful.

The elderly, the sick and all those who for any legitimate reason are unable to leave their homes, may still obtain Plenary Indulgence if, with the soul completely removed from attachment to any form of sin and with the intention of observing, as soon as they can, the usual three conditions, "on the days concerned, they pray for the sanctification of priests and offer their sickness and suffering to God through Mary, Queen of the Apostles".

Partial Indulgence is offered to all faithful each time they pray five Our Father, Ave Maria and Gloria Patri, or any other duly approved prayer "in honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to ask that priests maintain purity and sanctity of life".

Father included this prayer which could be used

Quote:
O Jesus, Eternal Priest,
keep Thy priests within the shelter of Thy Sacred Heart,
where none may touch them.
Keep unstained their anointed hands, which daily touch Thy Sacred Body.
Keep unsullied their lips, daily purpled with Thy Precious Blood.
Keep pure and unworldly their hearts sealed with the sublime mark of the priesthood.
Let Thy holy love surround them from the world's contagion.
Bless their labors with abundant fruit,
and may the souls to whom they minister be their joy and consolation here
and their everlasting crown hereafter.
Mary, Queen of the Clergy, pray for us;
obtain for us numerous and holy priests.
Amen.

Jenn,

It reads like that to me too. I think the comment about mass was meant as a means of allowing for those who simply cannot make it (persons with limited means of travel --older people who reply on others to take them to mass?) but not as a general rule. Sorry, I should have made that clearer from the start.

Peace,

No apologies necessary, Michele. I was thinking to LLMom's question, and needed to go back to figure out what is the indulgenced act -- going to Mass on August 4.

And to further answer your question if going to Mass on Saturday would fulfill it, the date of the anniversary of St. Jean Marie Vianney's death is August 4, and that is the day that is cited in the indulgence. I'm not an expert or final say, just looking at the dates and the decree.

Ah I found where I had seen this!

From the Apostolic Penitentiary, “The Gift of the Indulgence” (2000), n. 5, under the heading “General Remarks on Indulgences”:

Quote:
5. It is appropriate, but not necessary, that the sacramental Confession and especially Holy Communion and the prayer for the Pope's intentions take place on the same day that the indulgenced work is performed; but it is sufficient that these sacred rites and prayers be carried out within several days (about 20) before or after the indulgenced act. Prayer for the Pope's intentions is left to the choice of the faithful, but an "Our Father" and a "Hail Mary" are suggested. One sacramental Confession suffices for several plenary indulgences, but a separate Holy Communion and a separate prayer for the Holy Father's intentions are required for each plenary indulgence.

Again this is from the Jubilee Year but it has not been revoked.

Edited to add: It was on Fr. Z's site that I first saw it --June 25th 2009

I received this reminder yesterday from a friend but this thread has been so helpful! Thanks Michelle for clarifying the detachment from venial sin issue which I've always been a little confused about.

I am well on my way to finishing the conditions for this Plenary Indulgence....Praise God!! What a great gift the Church gives us in these indulgences.

Speaking of plenary indulgences, today --Dedication of St. Mary Major-- is also a day for gaining a plenary indulgence at our local parish (Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary --called St. Mary's) which has recently been granted as been granted a spiritual bond to the Papal Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome.

Apparently only 80 Marian shrines in the world share this privilege and we are now one of them!

If you are within driving distance, consider making a pilgrimage (which is another way to gain a plenary indulgence). If you do, let me know and maybe we can meet up!

Today is also my 5 yr. old's birthday so we're all going to mass and then out to lunch!
