Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I wasn't sure where to place this so I put it under a new topic.

I know I've shared this idea before and it was put into Cay's Literature Alive! book, but I thought I'd revisit it.

Two years ago, when Mozart would have been 248, we threw a Mozart birthday tea party. We made a sachertorte - you can find the recipe in Usborne's Cooking Around the World - or you can do what we did...because I was very tired, we bought a chocolate-cake boxed mix (scandal), put a rasberry jam between the two layers...frosted it and called it sachertorte.

I drew a map of Austria out of butcher paper and J and S painted it. I then cut out eighth notes from black construction paper and we used those to play "Pin the musical note on Mozart's birth city." When we turned each child around - we had about 20 kids here, we counted to three in German...we also made the flag of Austria and colored a printout map and labeled the birth city and the capital of Austria. We also played musical chairs to some of Mozart's music.

Before we started all of the activities, we read, I think, it was Mike Venezia's book on Mozart, to everyone so they were introduced to him if they hadn't already been.

After we served the tea and sachertorte, we watched Beethoven Lives Upstairs, as I thought it would be a good way to introduce another composer since these two composers had actually met.

Anyway, this idea could be revised and used for any composer, inventor, or artist. I could just see us throwing a Michelangelo party on March 6 (his birthday) and have everyone laying on their backs and painting a picture taped to the underside of my kitchen table.

Enjoy!

Maria -- Ilove this idea. Thanks for sharing. A real sachertorte is extremely dry (as are most of the Austrian cakes). We sent one back to the states and forgot to tell them to use lots of sclagoobers (whipped cream) -- they thought it was stale!

I think I'll do this on the 27th for Mozart! We have the Classical Kids tape of Mozart's Magical Fantasy so we can play that during the tea party. Any good kid's movies out there about Mozart?

I am reviving this old thread because I just LOVE this idea Maria. I want to do this with my kids this year.

In addition to the sachertorte (which we will make your way, Maria), I was thinking Pirouline cookies for "The Magic Flute," and open faced cream cheese and blueberry jam sandwiches cut into moon shapes for "A Little Night Music." Any other ideas?
