Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi my "First Graders" this year are already finished with 100 EZ lessons. Someone suggested Writing Road. Anyone done this with 6 year olds? Comments? My son does not like workbooks (and has VERY SLOW processing speed) so I am trying to avoid too much writing to help with his "negative attitude" towards school. Daughter loves workbooks. So may have to do more than one program?

Thanks
Renee

Renee - this is probably THE most teacher and time intensive program I've ever come into contact with. It's good, don't get me wrong, but unless you're ready to ditch everything else on the lesson plans and move everyone else's homeschooling into the survival zone, I wouldn't attempt this. It IS a great and worthwhile program if you're trying to remediate phonics, feel called to really remediate some spelling, and I think I've heard that it is helpful in cases of dyslexia. If you're looking for something workbooky but not terribly teacher intensive that teaches/reinforces phonics I'd suggest the Little Angel Readers with their workbooks. MUCH easier on mom and little one!!! I'm certain others could suggest good alternatives as well. Just my 2cents!

Oh...forgot to say...the Little Angel Reader program could easily accomodate your needs - the workbook/activity books aren't necessary - we don't usually do them - so your son would be fine with the lesson and just some reading. You could purchase a set of activity books for your daughter to use so she would have her *workbook fix*.

You know what, I don't think we need Writing Road to Reading after all. WE don't have major issues, and I can barely survive what we're doing already....

I will look into Little Angel Reader....sounds much easier on all of us Thanks so much!

Julia Fogassy wrote "Sound Beginnings" which is the "Writing Road to Reading" approach, but made much easier and available for us mother educators.

Sound Beginnings

I used this with my Kindergartener, and will be using it again this year. I love it because it reinforces phonics through writing and dictation, and it helped ds write his letters and develop good writing habits. He doesn't have any problems, but it really lays a very good foundation, which is what I want. It's all laid out and doesn't take too long for each lesson.

I know the Little Angel readers have all the nice pictures and workbooks, and I thought my son might need the extra visuals, but he didn't and really enjoyed this program.

We use both. My kids learn the phonics with Sound Beginnings, then we use the Little Angel Readers. I will say my ds, the third child, struggled terribly with handwriting so we had to adjust Sound Beginnings. It teaches the writing of the letters as the sounds are learned.
