Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Old Farmer's Almanac mentions that

Quote:
The closest Moon of the year occurs [today] July 21 at a distance of 222,117 miles. Coastal areas will experience higher-than-normal tides. See our Tide Calculator.

Did the Apollo mission pick July 20 because the moon is closer?

Quote:
July 22 is also the date of longest solar eclipse of the century, a 6.7-minute totality that sweeps over India during its monsoon season before traversing China and entering the Pacific at Shanghai.

See NASA

We can't view it in North America, so you can see it from these sites:

we're supposed to be able to see a partial eclipse from here just before sunset. I was going to post about this when I first heard about it, but then I realized we probably don't have many members in India, China and Nepal ...

I'll enjoy it for you, Cactus Mouse.

I haven't seen anything to address this in my reading so far. It's an interesting question, but I'm thinking it probably didn't factor in since the other moon missions following it (and the one before where they lowered the lunar lander to within a few miles of the moon's surface) were at various times of the year when they would not have taken advantage of that configuration. It does look like all the landings were close to the 1st quarter of the moon though - so there must be something to that.

I was sad that we are having a new moon right now myself because we can't even go out and look at the moon at night to "celebrate" along with our moon/lunar studies.   But since we need to have a new moon to have a solar eclipse I guess that is the trade off this year.    Wish we could see that!
