My son brought home 'The Invisible Man' from the library. Is it safe for him to read?
Feeling foolish that I have to ask this.... shouldn't I know this already?

The Invisible Man is a very intense book about being black in America in the South in the 1950's. It includes (as I recall...having read it probably 35 years ago!) many serious incidents of racially-based violence and discrimination. I read it in high school, and I think 15 or 16 is plenty early enough for children to deal with this level of intensity. I don't recall any indecency, but there was probably some strong language. I certainly think you should read it before your son does and see if you are comfortable with him reading it. If you are interested in a book for middle school level that addresses the issue of discrimination, Maniac Magee by Spinelli was a favorite one for my children around the early teen years.

thanks, Caroline, but I think I have a different book. It's by H.G. Wells, about a man who makes himself invisible.

It's been a long time since I read that, but I do remember some details about his undressed state, and as a young female that made me uncomfortable. I think I was 14 at the time.
I think you should preview just to make sure it's in your comfort level and what he can handle.
