Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi, my situation is similiar to the post from Jenn (from WY) written further down. Background: son is in second grade, learned to read with 100 Easy Lessons, reads well. We never did phonics. We started spelling this year and he's having a hard time with it. Just tonight while spelling "stuff" he guessed the "t" with my pronunciation of "st" and it took him five tries to get the "U".

My only thought has been to have him copy by hand all of Jan Brett's phonogram cards (from her website). Should he use a phonics workbook? For spelling we've been using Natural Spelling which is just a list of very easy words and he's having a hard time with that even. (I say easy b/c compared to the spelling words at the local Catholic school, and even the second grade CHC speller, these are simple.)

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Even though 100 Easy Lessons is phonics based, it doesn't include more than one phonogram per letter or many common irregular words. Because our state required me to teach a bunch of things under the umbrella of Language Arts, I chose to use Sound Beginnings which is one of the MODG suggestions. I believe you are supposed to use it over a number of years. I know we won't finish it this year.

I won't say that it is the most engaging exciting program, however, my boys like it and the other little ones at the table are picking up their phonograms too. We have moved very slowly due to morning sickness, but the boys are starting to spontaneously spell things and doing a much better job reading than after we finished 100 Easy Lessons. They did not transition to reading as well as many other kids after that book.

In Sound Beginnings you teach penmanship and phonograms together, so as a child writes a line of "o's", he is saying "ah, oh, ooh" with each one to reinforce the three options he has when he sees the letter in a word. After they have been introduced to phonograms, you dictate them back to the child to see if he can remember what letter goes with the sound. You could use a similar method with any set of phonogram cards I'm sure. I was just reading in the Charlotte Mason Companion last night that the author used a similar method based on Maria Montessori's sandpaper letters to teach her daughter reading.

I think knowing all the common phonograms for each letter was key with our boys.
