Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 13dd has chosen St. Cecilia as her Confirmation saint. I found these two books on Amazon and am wondering if any of you have read them. Or, can you recommend any other resources on St. Cecilia beyond the little blurbs online and in saints books? Thanks!

I love St. Cecilia. I am not familiar with the titles you listed above. I have some suggestions, some in-print, some not.

I read as a young girl a book entitled Who Are You?: Life of St. Cecilia by Marie Cecilia Buehrle, printed in 1971 by Prow. It's just a little book, but the images were so vivid, as it combined the "Acts of the Martyrdom of St. Cecilia" (see Catholic Encyclopedia entry and Roma sotterranea By Giovanni Battista de Rossi which has the full account), the Golden Legend of St. Cecilia (medieval times) and the accounts of her tomb and body being found in the catacombs and description of Roman architecture. I am so disappointed that this book is so expensive and rare. Perhaps you could try to get a copy through ILL? I think it's worth a trackdown, but not the prices of the used copies.

What I find so interesting is that historians were questioning the authenticity of her existence and the accuracy of her "Acts" until they found her incorrupt body. The Incorruptibles: A Study of the Incorruption of the Bodies of Various Catholic Saints and Beati by Joan Carroll Cruz includes her story.

The major shrine of St. Cecilia is Santa Cecilia in Trastevere.

Mary's Books are in the process of reprinting Dujarie Press saint books by Brother Ernest, and St. Cecilia is one. This is Level 1 reading, but they are still very good books for all ages. I grew up with one about St. Dominic Savio and it's still a favorite memory.

There's a great account of St. Cecilia in 57 Saints by the Daughters of St. Paul. Now I have the version copyright 1963. The DSP have a newer version of the book with new illustrations and I don't know if the stories are the same, either (they have a tendency to print new books under old titles).

Joan Windham has a nice story about St. Cecilia, which can be found in Sixty Saints for Girls or the Volume 1 of Story Library of the Saints. Both are OOP, unfortunately.

I'm not too helpful in the way of in-print books, sorry.

I really like the story of St. Cecilia in the book 'Heroes of God's Church' by Fr. Matimore, Neumann Press. It has 17 pages on St. Cecilia. Beautiful black and white pictures, one for each Saint.
This is just a great Saint book to have on your bookshelf.

It does use what I guess you would call poetic licence, but you do get a feeling for what it must have been like to live in those times.

You can read that excerpt on Love2Learn.net.
