Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Thoughts?? My late and up until now reluctant reader has heard about these books from a few friends. He asked if he could read them?

I bought these for my son, read a couple of pages and promptly returned them.

I thought the kid was whiny and annoying. How many times can he use dumb and stupid in his sentences? I just didn't like them at all.

I am wary of anything that is "pop-culture"--very much seems like a "pulp" fiction for kids, imo.

It is all over our bookstores and library. Though, I have not read them, the title, in and of itself, is disparaging...there is nothing "beautiful" or creative about it.

I am really into looking for things that build up my children, that instill beauty and truth in their hearts...intuitively, I just don't think this is it...fwiw.

God Bless,
Maggie

That was my take on them too, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. Thanks for reminding me to trust MY instincts.

I looked into these for a friend whose son checked them out from the Catholic school library. I also talked to a priest, who, although he thought they were funny, himself, did not think that they were appropriate reading for pre-teens at all or most teens. We agreed that they seemed more appropriate as a humorous look back at those years for young adults.

I read some of the "Diary" on-line, which is how it started (as a web book). Looks like you can still read to get a taste of it and decide if you want your kids reading it - personally, I don't. here on funbrain.com

My kids loved them, thought they were hilarious. My dh loved them, thought they were hilarious. DS 5 sounded out, "dumb moron," from this book--I was so proud (NOT).

It is twaddle at it's worst/best.

I thought that they would be a good insight to a kid that gets bullied and overcomes that. But they are not for us.

I think some of the opinions expressed here are rather harsh. We enjoy many books at my house which may not be enjoyed at yours. Its a matter of discernment in each household.

Mary Chris asked for opinions about the books. That's what we gave. I don't think any of us gave an indictment on the people who read these books. I'm sorry if you felt that way at all.

************MODERATOR'S NOTE**************

It is indeed a matter of discernment in each household!!!    And, Mary Chris asked for opinions so that she could decide for her own kids.

If some enjoy books that others don't.....that's fine!

The 4Real About Us Documents explain......

We strive to choose the choicest part of educational opportunities, hold fast to what is good, share a loosely defined educational philosophy, and enjoy its related methods.

And, we strive to create an Atmosphere of Respect and Courtesy.

Happy reading, everyone!

OK sorry ladies if I upset anyone with my comment, I changed it.

I did not mean to imply that they were indicative (in a negative way) to what you decide to use for your chidren.

My son, who rarely reads fiction at all, has read both of them. I agree they are complete twaddle but at the time, 2nd grade, I was just thrilled he was reading at all. He was in school when he started reading them and I think it would have done more damage to take them away at that point. Now that they are all home fulltime I have more control over what comes into the house and they have less exposure to pop culture and peer pressure. I am happy to report he is currently enjoying Redwall so no permanent harm done.
