My son (who "loves" theater) has a chance to be involved with this production during the school year, but we must register for it this summer. After viewing much of it on video I don't see it as a very reverent treatment of the Bible (a bit goofy). Is it harmless, or something that you would stay away from? DS enjoys theater so much and there are not a lot of opportunites available, but obviously it's not worth compromisting our values for. (But sometimes I wonder if I make a "big deal out of nothing" so other opinions are so helpful.)

I think I'm a bit of a black sheep here on these forums with letting my kids do things others won't, but we LOVE Joseph. Now,the video version we have (with Donny Osmond) is a little  with scantily clad women occasionally...and there's the little matter of the story of Potiphar's wife...
But I have a deep, deep respect for the story of Joseph (I believe listening to a study on it at one point actually saved my life during a very dark time) and while I think it's *goofy* I don't find it *irreverent*. It's hard for me to articulate the difference.
I think it would depend on the child's age in my opinion. Of course if you have doubts you should go with your own gut because you know your family!

We really love Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat. I agree with Amy that it is goofy but it does not seem irreverant to me either. The one with Donny Osmond does have those moments that Amy mentions (we fastforward them.) The show itself does NOT have to be produced that way.
I would let my kids be in it. (And I tend NOT to expose my kids to a lot.)

Joseph & TATD is one of my favorite musicals ever (behind only Les Mis). it is the one i always try to take my kids to as a "first broadway show" when it tours.

THANK YOU!!! I would so like for DS to have the experience of being involved with this production. I have had the thought that in this day and age when the secular culture is moving further and further away from Biblical principals, at least this show is talking about the Bible.
A related question, how do you feel about Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell? Just curious...
Thanks again for the input. I am blessed with some good solid Catholic friends IRL, but they aren't into musicals and theater like we are. You are so helpful!

I'd be a little more wary of JCS and Godspell, especially JCS. But I am FAR from an expert.
Here is a link to some information about Jesus Christ Superstar.
Godspell I think can be done really well although a local Catholic School really added in a part similar to the Joseph DVD.

I'm curious about Godspell also. We just got an invite from a family friend to watch with them. I know close to nothing about it.

The movie, stef??????
I found the movie painful.........but I saw a live version which I found done more tastefully. There were some funny scenes......and realy very touching scenes.............as well as the included Resurrection scene which I THINK is part of the show production but not in the movie......I THINK. I could enjoy the movie better after that...........
The video is quite 1970's quality.
I was wary at first.........and would always recommend a parent preview a play first. It has to sit right with you.
Personally......Godspell and Joseph are well-loved here...........but we LOVE musicals...........LOTS of musicals. I am listening to a soundtrack at this moment, in fact.  I Joseph, we skip the Potiphar's wife scene and ignore the scantily dressed women in one of the last scenes.....it is so busy you almost miss them. We do not watch the Godspell video.....just listen to the music occasionally. For us, it just adds to our love of God and the Bible......but it could offend the sense of others........it is going to be dependent on tastes.
As for JCS.........I have only let the three oldest view the movie....(16 and up).....I do not want to scandalize the younger ones or have them misinterpret anything....Mary Magdalene.........Judas.......the olders and I chat about what we see......and we hardly listen to the music........a lot of it is really hard-rock and not necessarily to our tastes....though I suppose a day in my teenage-hood I may have preferred it 
I hope I make sense.......I have experience with these......so, if any questions more....send them my way.

My dd was in a production of Joseph a couple of years ago. It was absolutely fabulous. A really wonderful experience for her. Some of it is a bit goofy, true, but I don't think it's irreverent. Dd did it with a Christian HS group so the overall atmosphere was very godly.

We love the music so much. Our friends were involved in a local production and my older ds and I still talk about how well done it was.

Thank you so much for all of your very helpful responses. We are definitely planning to register and allow DS to be involved with Joseph & TATD. I'm excited for him to have this opportunity. God bless you for your help! The responses on the other shows are appreciated as well as this is something that I have often wondered about.
