I've had excruciating pain on one side while breastfeeding for the past 2.5 weeks. It doesn't get better during the feed and in fact the bre*st is still sore even after the feed is over. It feels like sharp rods of pain through the bre*st.
I've had a good feel and it doesn't feel like a blocked duct. There is a tiny, tiny sore place by the nipple which is raw and weeping, but it seems incredible that that would cause such excruciating pain.
I don't feel flu-y so I don't think it's mastitis.
I've booked a GP appointment for tomorrow but I'd be interested to hear if anyone has any ideas. I'm aware that the GP might not be very well informed about bf and may just tell me to wean my baby (who is 17 months and still feeding enthusiastically, day and night).

It sounds like thrush to me. I had it once(well, several times, but this specific time sounds like your symptoms) with a tiny bit of sore, raw skin on the nipple, but the thrush had gone deep into the tissue causing that deep, stabbing pain. It took 10 days of Diflucan to kick it. Oddly, dd had no corresponding white patches on her tongue or in her mouth.
I hope you get some relief soon, Doris!

Thanks, Lisa and Molly.
I've been to the doc and he thinks it's the little cut near my nipple which is causing the bother and has prescribed some oral and topical antibiotics.
He's advised me not to feed from the affected side, though -- for a week! That sounds a bit bonkers to me -- won't the milk dry up or won't it caused a blockage if I'm not draining it? Should I follow his advice? Pump?

I probably wouldn't stop nursing on that side.. I would wash off the topical anitbiotics before nursing.. and I would likely use something like lansinoh to help protect it from irritation, rather like you would with dry cracked skin like some women deal with when beginning nursing.

Oh, I had a similar issue this year and MaryM helped me through it. The cut wouldn't scab over, and every time I nursed it broke open and was so painful. I kept trying to nurse and it aggravated it every time. Continually nursing with it made it take so much longer to heal (over 2 weeks, and I was in tears every time I nursed).
I ended up manually expressing (couldn't pump because that would injure it, also) and nursing on that sidehen it felt full and painful and expressing wasn't doing the trick. I did Neosporin and Lanisoh, sometimes using band-aids to keep it covered and the medicine in place instead of on my br*.
I know that pain and I'll pray that it heals up really soon.

I just wanted to update this thread in case it's of any use to anyone else.
The soreness is completely gone, praise the Lord! I used four things:
1. Novena to St Therese and visit to her relics
2. Prayer request on here
3. Olive leaf extract
4. Manuka honey (1 tsp orally daily)
Whether one, two or all four things, something worked!

Dr. Jack Newman is another great source of info for thrush, mastitis, latch problems, etc.
Here is Dr. Jack Newman's article
God Bless,
Maggie
